I'm looking to get a Tikka T3 Hunter in 7mm for my next main hunting rifle.

I was wondering if the new T3x's are worth it with the new features? It seems that most of the new features are on the synthetic stocks? I'm looking at either the wood or laminate stock
There are good deals on the old T3's out there right now that are tempting.

I like to hear some real world hunting experience with these, pros and cons to them, any issues with them? I will be using it in all weather, wet, hot, -30.

I have a friend that has one in 270 and I've seen firsthand how accurate they are.

As far as temperature goes, the Canadian Rangers just adopted them as a service rifle, so that should answer that. The majority of the upgrades are on the syhtetic stock versions, but all versions benefit from the steel recoil lug, enhanced loading port and metal bolt shroud. If you can get a deal on a T3, you won't be disappointed but the T3x rifles are very good.

that is not the Rangers that adopted the rifle .... we are few waiting a year of service and see how they survive the service ...

Tikka T3x Arctic - "the ranger rifle" is as far from Tikka Hunter as you can get. The qualities of adopted "ranger rifle" are also questionable. So it is not an argument in this case.

As for T3 vs T3x - virtually no difference. You can put recoil lug and shroud and bolt on T3 to match T3x for less money. Everything else except the slightly bigger ejection port is the same.

The upgrades on minor plastic things on stocks are irrelevant I would say. Because if you plan to keep the original plastic stock... well, it means you don't care about stocks. If you care about stock - you put Tikka in aftermarket stocks anyway.

If you see T3 for cheap - buy it. If you don't care about couple of hundred here and there - buy T3x. You can do no wrong in both cases.

Thanks for the info, I'm new to the Tikka world so I'm not sure what improvements can be done to the T3 (ie bolt shroud etc) and where one would source parts for them.

Are the detachable mags still the same with the T3 to T3x?

Can you get higher cap mags than the 3rd ones it comes with?

Magazines depend on bottom metal or bottom plastic. There are 3 options in general:

1) stock plastic single stack, as it comes from the box. Yes all T3 and T3x mags are the same, no change

2) there is a version of Tikka which is called CTR, it has bottom metal wich accepts metal double stack magazine. People usually sell these bottom metal and magazine from their CTR to get option 3 below. But if you want, you can buy that CTR bottom and mag and put it on you stock Tikka Hunter

3) there are multiple aftermarket stocks fitting Tikka. T3 and T3x stocks are exactly the same. These aftermarket stocks come in a variety of options, but usually all of them are using AI mag - AICS pattern (accuracy international). These are either metal or plastic double stack magazines which are not CTR magazine. But AICS pattern magazines are more common and aftermarket stocks are plenty. So this option is the most flexible. there are many more.

In general if you just want a cheap rifle to hunt - stay with option 1, nothing wrong with it. If you want to spent a little for a magazine improvement - get option 2. If you really want a good stock and good magazines - go with the 3rd option. Just to note, a top notch aftermarket stock is around $1200 - $1800 if you go with premium ones like Cadex.

PS

You can also do other things, like bolt shrouds, handles, muzzle breaks and whatever. For a rough idea look at:

I picked up a T3 stainless last weekend. It's a pretty nice rig. I purposefully didn't look at the T3x because I didn't want to know what I'm missing. If you choose to add after market parts, it could be pretty close T3x I'd guess. WILLIE

If you find a good deal on a T3 in the caliber you want I would say snap it up! The only real upgrade I would say you need is get s stainless steel recoil lug from Lumley Arms and then go shoot.

I bought a t3x lite stainless and the only thing I like better about it than the t3 is the larger grip fits my hand very well. This was not worth the extra money, but I do still really like the rifle and in a few years, I'll have forgotten what it cost anyway.

A t3 with Lumley arms dbm kit, comes with the stronger recoil lug, pillars and stainless steel screws. I ordered one for mine to use AICS 10 round mags

Thanks, that is a lot of good info.

I have some research to do now.
