Well I'm looking for a scope for my weatherby vanguard series 2 in 30-06. I am looking at a Vortex diamondback 3.5-10x50 BDC or a Zeiss Terra 3-9x42 in a R20 reticle. I am hoping to be within a $400 range so this is where I am currently at. I plan to use it for moose, bear and deer. Any other suggestions in this price range will be considered too. I have been trying to do as much research as possible but I know there are people on here with much more knowledge and experience I will have than googling info, thankyou in adavance.

Check out Prophet River. Site sponsor getting rid of some older Nikon models at GREAT prices. I love the Burris Fullfield E1 as well. Amazing optical clarity. The bullet drop compensation marks are perfectly suited for 30-06 as well.

These Zeiss models they are selling on Ebay for like 1/2 price being around 200. saying they are made Germany for the European market no warranty except back to Europe I did get one 4x16 50 Conquest for like 150.00

My s2 is a .30/06 and I have a bushnell elite 3-9x40 on it in talley lightweights. Fits perfect and excellent scopes. Tradeex has some left over under $300

I don't like 50mm scopes on hunting rifles. I have a vortex viper 3-9x40 that goes for like $420(its the 1"tube model), but was on sale for more like $290.

Nikon scopes are liked by many. I was going to get a prostaff but i found the vortex on sale so i got that instead.

I got the same scope and it's great glass. Unfortunately cabelas has marked the viper back up to $420 again. 3-9x40 seems like a good size. 50 is a little hefty for 10x

how about a 4-12x42? Looking at that option too. Bigger objective means more light but rides higher up for obvious reasons. Like I said i'm researching as I'm fairly new to the rifle/scope scene..

The best deal on a scope is getting the right one the first time. Something that isn't going to fall apart later, something that you aren't going to out-grow when you eventually learn more.

What distances do you plan on shooting at? I am by no means a seasoned hunter but in my experience if shooting inside of 100 yards it's best to have 3x or less on the low end. Ive hunted once and only one in forested area on 4x and I had a rough time tracking moving prey with 4x magnification. I might be in the minority here but I'd avoid at 4-12 for hunting unless you're guaranteed to be shooting out past 100 yards. If it helps I recently bought a diamondback 1.75-5x32 and am very happy with it.

A lot of the very experienced guys around here swear by 2-7x scopes for that very reason. (Plus they sit nice and low)

As stated above, if you are shooting in tight bush (ie Ontario) where shots exceeding 100 y are rare, then you don't want too much scope. The old Bushnell 3200 1.75 to 5 X are my favorites, then the same in 2 to 7 X.
Every year we get young guys showing up at our camp with too much scope. Inevitably, they struggle when trying to get a shot off at a deer, as they cant get "on target" quickly enough, or "all I see is fur"... Next year they show up with a low power scope, or even iron sights...

thanks for the advice guys. From what I gather shots will be in the 100 yard mark, maybe 200 max. My buddy said he flopped his bear at 80 yards last year I thnk he is using a 4-12x40 vortex diamondback. I was invited moose hunting aswell by Thunderbay area so like I said I am hoping to equip my 30.06 with an all around scope that a) isn't going to break the bank and b) buy it and realize its too much or not enough. I previously had a vanguard series 2 with a 3-9x40 vortex DB scope but sold it (didnd't even put a round through it) as I didn't plan or got the invite to hunt big game but now I'm back to square one, so just want to do it right, the second time I guess hahaha
