I like the idea of a pistol caliber carbine because it means you can run your pistol and rifle off the same ammo, and in this case magazines. But are the JR Carbines decent, reliable rifles? or are they just a gimmick?

I have one in 9mm and I love it. Going on 3000 rounds without an issue. Plus they are just as fun as an AR to tinker with and add stuff to. I also like that I can run my G17 and my JR on the same mags. They are a little bit of a pain to take down and clean until you get used to them. I love mine. It's one of my "never sell" rifles.

Owned a couple Kel-Tecs, a JR Carbine, a Kriss and a Couple Beretta CX4 Storms.
If it's worth anything, the Beretta CX4 is my favourite (the only con being they only make a 9mm Non-restricted version for Canada.)

JR is awesome. You can mod trigger and stock and etc all with after-market AR parts. Cleaning... is a bit*h but it can run pretty dirty. My JR is a pig with OEM parts it will eat everything I feed it but after changing to aftermarket trigger and etc it became more picky eater than my sons so I stay OEM for now.

Heard the 45 acp was a jam-o-matic. 9mm is good though

With the latest recalls done on it, mine is reliable.

As stated, take down for cleaning is poorly conceived.
Mag release location sucks, and no bolt hold open sorta blows.
Other than those few niggly items, it is a decent and fun little carbine.

My 9mm has worked flawlessly with 1-2K rounds through it.
Complete takedown is a bit of a pain, but also not necessary for routine maintenance.
Mag release would be nicer on the other side, but just like any other rifle that doesn't have an AR style release, you get use to it pretty quick with practice.
Same as the bolt hold open (or lack thereof), it's not nearly as big a deal as some would make it out to be.

If you have the updated buffer and tube the 45acp is just as reliable as a 9mm or 40. I have two in 9mm and a 45acp. All MKII. Great fun to shoot, take a lot of AR accessories and doesn't look like a plastic space ranger gun.

My 45acp shoots very dependably after the addition of the heavier buffer and new spring.

I have been load developing lately and these little carbines can shoot!

This is at 50 yards.
