What your personal experience with the 25wssm?, last weekend I was at the range with my Winchester model 70 25wssm and was shooting at 100 yards and it was like a laser, 200 breaking clays one after another, was so happy(doesn't take much) I came home a made a deal for another off the EE, now I'm disappointed I've missed 2 coyotes this weekend with the Winchester, first was at 342 yards and the second at 260 yards, both shots I was rock solid the 342 I was holding dead on the 260 yard shot I held top of his back and figured 6" bullet drop( got looking at trajectory charts)after first miss, and missed again??? What am I doing wrong is this caliber garbage passed 200?

What bullet are you loading? (Or are you using factory ammo?)

I have an A-Bolt in 25 wssm and using a 100 grain Scirocco @ 3300 fps muzzle velocity the thing is a laser beam and has a 400 yard point blank range using an 8" diameter vital.

I was using 87gr berger bthp, everything I fed it at the range shot the same, the 87gr berger , 117 sst, and 85sp all hand loads and starting powder weights.

I've had a SS a bolt from when they first came out. Mine is strictly for hunting around 100yds. I use factory winchester ballistic tip ammo. The 25wssm has a reputation of the barrel heating up after 3 shots and accuracy goes south. Don't tell that to the approximately 30 -40 bucks it's dropped and 1 moose. On a side note my tikka varmint 223 is a later beam, the 25wssm isn't in the same league.

Let me ask you a question do you regularly shoot your rifle at 350 and 260 yrds? To miss a coyote at those distances only takes a breath to throw you off or a slight gust of wind. My suggestion is either keep your shots a bit shorter or a bit more practice at those distances. You have yourself some dead coyotes in short order

How are you determining the range of said Coyotes?
Range finder might help in determining the range and then one can do the math for hold over ...

I have a bushnell Elite 1 mile range finder, and a dead calf, so the range is correct, the only thing I can see is the bullet is dropping more than I'm holding over, the coyotes seem to jump every time I miss so I'm starting to think I'm shooting right under them, I'll try and video it if I get another chance, like I said earlier, I was rock solid and not nervous, breathing was good so was kinda disappointed when it did not drop, I figured 5"-6" of drop at @260, I'm going to have to shoot it at a target and see what kind of drop I actually have.

Had to ask Matt as I didn't see the range finder mentioned in the opening post.
Be interested to see how your experience plays out when you do some range/ distance results .
Don't forget to share the kill shots when you get the new 25wsm dialled in.

On your first shot you should always hold on "fur" I bet you shot over

This reminds of a story and not meant to side track, but the two times I have shot over coyotes they both hit the deck on their bellies and got up running full tilt in the opposite direction of which they came, the last one I was under and it jumped three feet in the air.
From 75 yards and 100 yards ...all guessing as I do not own a range finder.
Once was a 30-30 others where the Remington autoloader in 30-06... targets of opportunity they where.

Sorry to continue the sidetrack but coyote hunting stories are fun.

FLHTCUI, They really can jump when scared lol! I was on a set with the ecaller a while back when a big male came over the hill. At first I thought he was coming right in but he was following some fresh horse tracks that were following a fence line. He would stop and look in my direction every once in a while, only liked parts of the song I was playing I guess. Once he was at the closest point along the horse tracks (470y) he turned and looked giving me a quartering presentation, I let a shot go at him. That coyote went straight up in the air 3-4 feet and landed going 60mph. After, I packed up and walked out to where he was standing to see if I got a piece of him. I didn't find any blood or hair but the bullet impact on the hill behind and where his tracks were, that bullet had to have gone between his back legs almost taking off his pecker! There was also a trail of piss that went about 40ft. Pretty funny.
