18.1 inch barrel

If I were to take an 18.1 inch barrel with a removable muzzle device, and weld the muzzle device or permanently attach it to the barrel somehow, could it be eligible for non restricted status? This is assuming the rifle in question is not prohibited or restricted by name.
 
Barrel length is based on the rifled section of a barrel and OAL is the total length of the complete unit. Two separate issues. You wont be able to make a 18.1 barrel into a 18.5" barrel :(

Nope! The government does not recognize added parts such as flash hiders even when welded in place.
Basically boltface to end of rifling is what counts.
Years back they used to accept the welded on muzzle device but apparently too many M1 carbines and HK 91s were then removed from restricted to NR so they again changed their minds and made them either restricted or prohib status, again.
 
Thanks for the info guys! I appreciate the time to post ATRS! I guess the government wants our non restricteds to shoot faster projectiles and to be more accurate. Good thing we have those laws to keep us safe. The extra 0.4in would just stick outside of my trenchcoat anyways when I try to conceal it.

the next trick was to weld a piece of .303 brit barrel onto the m1 carbine making it non restricted.... meets the definition of the rule, for the most part.
 
Rifling is irrelevant. The same restrictions apply to shotguns.
Extensions no longer count for barrel length even if steel to steel fusion welded.
 
Depends on what kind of gun bolts can have a 16 in barrel and shotguns can go to Min overall length of 26 in

no barrel lenght also takes into account the chamber, the chamber is not rifled, so that assessment based on rifling is not entirelycorrect. It is from bolt face to end of rifling
 
I think the AR-180B was an exception as it was not welded on. Also theres a Revolver (S&W500?) with comp that is also safe.

Otherwise, yes, it's the actual barrel/rifling.

It's from bolt face to end of continuous material. Counterbored rifles are not shorter than non-counterbored rifles.
 
ar180B had the muzzle brake cut from the barrel itself. it was always part of it, never added. but they made the last generations with the same overall length barrel but they actually attached a muzzle device to a threaded the barrel, and thats why they were restricted.
