I thought they just had 14", could these 16.5"s just be 14"s with a permanent muzzle attachment of some kind?
No, they looked like about 16.5". This was a Coast Guard guy saying that's what they had on their ship. It was on the Mossberg Owners forum.
Can I post a link from another forum or is that a CGN police freak out ?
Not sure, why don't you just post the pic?
All the newer USCG 870s I've seen have been in this configuration.

Don't know how to post a pic. This one looked a bit longer.
The pictures you posted are clearly 14" though.
Just copy, paste and drop into the Insert Image box on the bar above where you write your post.
Iirc... A few years back (during the LGR) some 16" 870s turned up. I think they were police surplus or something.. Again Iirc, may have been from Quebec. Anyways, after they'd been sold to civis the rcmp worked out the guns had been cut down by the police. Lol. Pretty sure everybody had to turn in their barrels. Somebody else might recall or maybe even turned in their barrel..
Dinks, eh?Looks like a 14" barrel.
I bought one of the Surplus 16" 870's when they were around, got a letter one day saying that I had to send the gun in for destruction as it was a prohibited item. I responded that they were welcome to buy my barrel from me but that I didn't like the idea of having it destroyed without compensation.
They told me they would not pay me for my gun or barrel and that I would have to defend myself in court and set up a court date...... then they tried again to have me take it in for destruction and I declined saying I'd take chances in court. They told me they would be flying someone in from out east for the court date and I suggested it might be cheaper just to buy my barrel......Obviously they were having none of that. Finally about a few weeks before the court date someone got in touch with me and told me that in fact they had been wrong the whole time and that a barrel can not be a prohibited device on it's own. It had to be connected to a receiver in order to be prohibited. I said fine I will remove it from my receiver and never assemble it ever again....... they were uncomfortable with the idea that I could simply decide to one day but the 16" barrel on my 870 to which I responded that I could just as easily cut a longer barrel down to 16" if I wanted to break the law.
They finally after many requests and mild threats conceded that I could indeed keep the barrel..... I offered to sell it again but they were not interested.
So the next week I went in to the local RCMP station with a 12.5" barrel to have it verified and registered. Once the gun registration had been updated to show a 12.5" barrel instead of the "prohibited" 16" I was good to go and the Country was safer then it had been only moments before......
The lady that was the firearms verifier at our local detchament had to be shown by another member how to release the action on an 870 and then proceeded to take the measurement of the 12.5" barreled 870 with the action open....... finding no corresponding barrel length in the FRT system she went about creating a new one. I didn't see any of this going on or I would have pointed out the error but after about 45 minutes of waiting for her to measure my barrel I was late for another appointment an asked what was taking so long? She said she had to create a new FRT number which I thought was odd as the 12.5" barrels are pretty common..... it wasn't till I got home and translated the mm measurement to inches that I realized what she had done.
Drove back and explained it to her, took her 5 minutes to correct the paperwork and I was gone without so much as a thank you or apology.
It's not till you deal with the CFC in a situation where they lie and intimidate, then fold and capitulate to the law, or that you deal with the local RCMP firearms expert who can't release the action on an 870, that you realize the possible levels of deceit and ineptitude in this country.
I learned a lot dealing with that 16" barrel and it remains as a monument for all that is wrong with our gun control scheme.

Well, the difference between your work example 870P and a cop "just doing his job" is it cost my BIL a year without his guns and 10 grand. After a year of court BS the charges were dropped and he got his guns back because he hadn't broken any laws.
Kinda hard to stomach imo. We should't cut them any slack.
Just so I'm clear 870P ...
So this 16" was "prohib" (or so they tried to say) because it was cut to that length ...... by the police ?
Or was the barrel manufactured to that length ?
