If I get my barrel cut/crowned/threaded from 22" to 18.5", am I able to re-use the original birdcage flash hider/front sight piece or am I out of luck? I'm thinking No because the grooves for the flash hider need to be machined. Please tell me I am wrong.

If I am out of luck, what is the best solution for re-establishing a front sight?

Gas lock front sight is the best bet...Dlask makes a very sweet setup as pictured, it also is adjustable to solve shimming the gas block properly too. A lil pricey but an excellent product.

There are also Navy gaslock sights kicking around...these provide a completely hooded front sight and are very well made too....some like the look others notsomuch...the hooded sight picture is also a bit weird.

There are also approaches to re installing a usgi flashider/sight by having the cut barrel threaded properly to accept them.

I have used both and prefer the Dlask setup ...it works and looks great and is a very well made part.....and CDN :)

IMO the front sight is better off on the gasblock anyway...guarantees that it is properly indexed as well as it is less likely to snag or get dinged back there vs at the muzzle.
Yes a lil less sight radius but....this aint no Anschutz :)

There are several options available to you in addition to the dlask gas lock sight unit.

M14.ca muzzle break, it is very nice IMHO.

You can attach a front sight of your choice directly to your barrel. I've seen Mini-14/30 front sights attached...... I'd done properly, they look very nice. But can also look like an abortion on toast...

I have also machined out the OEM FH and threaded it 1/2x28 and then indexed it on the barrel.

You are looking at $100 to $1,000,000 depending on your desired finished product. That is in addition to the cost to cut, crown and thread.

I was looking at the M14.ca muzzle brake front sight, i think that would be the best option. Two birds stoned at once as ricky would say. My gas system already locks up nicely, as much as i like the dlask GLFS i dont want to incur any extra costs.

Will the chinese front sight mount on it or do i need to get a usgi sight? I'm on a really tight budget otherwise i'd pick up a shorty and do a build from scratch. My current rifle has already been broken in, unitized, etc...

I really appreciate everyones input, thats why i come here! Thanks!

So what would i need, a usgi or nm sight?
Im starting to think i may just leave the damn thing alone and buy a shorty.

A 18.5" shorty needs a SA Bush rifle (taller) front sight. The 22"rifle sight will not work.
"Hear me now & believe me later" ;-)
If I recall the Bush sight was NM

Hmmm.... I've never had a problem using the standard from sight on a M14.ca LMB.
But what do I know, I've only installed a dozen of them.....
John

That is because the M14.ca LMB was designed for a chopped and threaded barrel. If you were to put an
original M305 muzzle break and front sight on an 18.5" bbl, it is not going to work out.
