I've been playing with numerous brands of ammo on my Savage, mostly the cheapies. It shoots extremely well with the Eley Match stuff, but i refuse to pay $30 a box for 22. I see that Nordic Marksman has the SK Match stuff for about $80 a brick. Is it worth it? Does it shoot better than say the Win Match stuff? (Actually, the Win that does best in it is the Wildcat).

Hard to say, all barrels will shoot differently. Best to try a box and compare. My issues is the shipping charges. Just can't order from them. :(

Ah, OK. I hadn't checked that end of it. I know it can be steep, but not sure if it was a deal breaker. Some sellers have pretty good rates, others skin you alive.

someone was posting about bricks of .22 match for 8$ federal i believe

I picked some up yesterday for $8 or $9. Going to try it. I have to admit with the win Wildcat and one of the CCI (can't remember which, too lazy to go downstairs and check) it shoots very well, 1" or less at a 100 on a calm day, but I do get the fairly regular flier whic I can't really tell if it's me or the ammo, and I would like to see exactly how well the gun can shoot.

You've found Winchester match .22LR ammo? Please be so kind as to give a few more details of this unusual ammunition.

Sorry, I erred. What I meant to write is the Win T22 target stuff. But what I do have left is several years old. Haven't seen any in quite a while, and honestly, I have not found a .22 that really likes it. I've tried it in a Savage Cub, MkII, 10-22, CZ, Norc (Em322), Henry lever, Cooey. It would make good plinking stuff, but none of those guns got any real accuracy with it.

Yes, Lapua/SK and Eley shoots a LOT better than anything else and they're the 2 top brands used by competition shooters. They each offer a few types depending on what you want to spend. I see little point paying $250/box for a savage or anything less than a real match rifle... the cheaper SK Standard Plus and Rifle match are great for the price, I think there's also Eley sport and Eley club that are their less expensive options. If it won't group, its usually either you or the rifle... the more expensive stuff will usually tighten the group a little more and have a bit more consistency.

Hirsch Precision and Nordic both carry a fair bit of real match .22lr ammo.

If you are regularly shooting 1" or less at 100 yards, keep using the ammo you have been using, whether its Winchester Wildcat or some variant of CCI. On the other hand, if you are getting regular fliers which spoil those groups, you might consider that the ammo referred to cannot shoot MOA or better at 100 yards, even in a rifle better than the Savage. What this means is that the ammo referred to is not capable of regularly shooting 1" or less at 100 yards. That is a very difficult standard to meet, even with good match ammo in a very good rifle.

But perhaps there's a more affordable step to take in search of improved accuracy results before ordering match ammo. Since T22 is either no longer available or very hard to find, try some CCI Standard Velocity. It's widely available and should give some indication about how your rifle shoots. If it shoots consistent, relatively small groups at 50 yards -- say, 3/4" groups -- then maybe it's worthwhile investing in even better ammo, such as entry level match ammo such as SK Standard Plus, which goes for about $70 per brick. Of course you don't want to order just one brick because the shipping will be pretty much the same whether it's one brick or four.

In any case, stick to standard velocity ammo when shooting .22LR for accuracy. High velocity ammo is not by its very nature accurate ammo at longer distances.

Yes, you are right that it is the ammo. If I shoot 10 groups (again, on a calm day - very rare here near Ottawa), I will have 5 or 6 near or slightly under 1", 2 or 3 will have either 4 or 9 shots within the inch, and one flier, which pretty well confirms that it is the ammo, and for the rest, the spread will be my fault, undoubtedly. Generally, I can tell as soon as I pull the trigger if the shot will be good or if I muffed it. At 50 yards, the Savage does very well with CCI and WIn subsonic, but I haven't been able to find either for quite a while. Oddly enough, the Rem subonic is no good in my Savage, but it is the most accurate ammo in my son's CZ.

Actually, I'll be going to the range early next week, and I'll post some targets, just to show what I mean.

Sight sponsor Tesro has a mid level mix of 5 different brands for around $130 for a brick of 500.Maybe buy one and a brick of each SK std plus and Rifle match as it will cost the same to ship 1 or 3 bricks.I think his mid level mix has 100 rounds of center x which always works good for me.

Hey Papaclaude et al.,

Was just at Tesro today picking up some ammo.

I'm sure Asmir can steer you in the right direction.

Since you're in/near Ottawa, you can probably arrange to pick it up & save the shipping.
