I suffered a significant break-in and safe breech a while back. Everything gone. I few of my rifles were recovered, these were benchrest and F-class guns. Two of them were built on Remington XR100 actions. The bastards did a number on them having chemically etched the polished stainless barrels, then ground off the serial numbers and spray pained the actions black. I am restoring these guns (I do all my own gunsmithing work) but I am contemplating the serial number issue. CFC says there is no requirement for them to have a serial number anymore. I am wondering your thoughts on creating my own unique number (much easier to remember than to search for a record of them should these bastards come back) or should I restore the manufacturer's serial number. These guns/actions are keepers and will never be sold.
