Is it too early to dream about Gopher season?

I once shot a gopher with a 12 gauge from 18 inches away. All we could find were the lips. I wouldn't call that a mess.,

12's work great early in the season when you can catch a whole clan of them sticking their heads out of the same hole. 1 shot = 3 to 6 less gophers.

I am not fussy about which .22 rounds I use, as long as they work in the rifle I'm using, and they're hollow points. I use .17 hmr, not fussy about brand, although I do like the Hornady 17 gr. I have two CZ 455's in 17, both factory stock, both shoot like a dream. You also get a satisfying "splop" using a .22 mag. With 12 ga., it's whatever is in the not much good for anything else category.

Shot 33 of the critters today. Don't ask. Maybe a good year for them. Saw at least 100.

You guys are killing me. lol My spring gopher trip evolved into a summer trip to bring Mrs. .22LRGUY out for her first trip west. I figure I should pass on a high-volume gopher shoot in the interest of maybe talking her into moving west. I have warned her that she'll be reading a book for at least one afternoon in the rental truck...on the edge of a gopher patch! :)

Made a few phone calls yesterday. They're up and running in the patch. Going to take a day next week and get some early shots in.

Another 40 today between two of us. Depending where you go and how sunny it is depends on how many you see. Another 3 weeks before they are really out.

Last year was very poor gopher shooting in my pastures, hardly saw any. My 17 Hornet did manage to get a few though. Got a couple of new toys to try out on them little hole digging bastiches.
