Hi Guys....I'd appreciate some advice. I just picked up an old USGI M14 stock on the EE. All of the metal parts (front ferrule, trigger pack frame, front swivel, etc...) are very rusted. I need some advice on how to best remove the rust while mimizing damage to the original blueing.

Any help appreciated

Thanks!

Soak the parts in vinegar for a few days. It will remove the rust and leave the metal a light/medium grey color at the same time.

Oil and steel wool will remove rust if you don't want to strip the original finish.

Evaporust is at Canadiantire, uses an enzime to eat the rust. Degrease and soak overnight or longer if deep. Metal comes out in they grey. Easy cleanup.

Woo Hoo!! First one to suggest Dishwasher!!!

Avoid harsh chemicals. To preserve as much original finish as possible I have been using gun oil and 000 or 0000 steel wool for 45 years. I just finished doing a recently acquired and (sadly) sporterized Savage .303 Montreal Musket that was covered in surface rust. It came out very nicely with no sign of pitting. I stripped everything from the action except the rotary magazine. I gave all the internal parts a good soaking in Fluid Film followed by the steel wool rub. Looks and works as new and shoots 168 gr loads very nicely.

Evaporust is an excellent product. Can and have used it in many different things from gun parts, tools, antiques etc. Works great and is quite safe. Krudcutter is also a great rust remover, use it to remove hard water rust spots, wipes of instantly and safe for many things.
