Hey guys, I'm an 870 guy a little out of my element here...so looking for some guidance! I was just about to buy a 500 Persuader (parkerized, 7-8 shot, bead sight) from a CGN sponsor when their inventory dried up. Was listed at about $430. I see a 590 "Tactical" for about $500 that looks like the same gun...but also don't see a plain/bead sight parkerized 500 on Mossberg's site either. I believe the part # is 50578. Is the 500 #50578 still made, what's the difference between IT, and the 590 Tactical? I'm not interested in any rails/ghost ring sights/tactical stocks, nothing. I don't need a 590-grade gun if it's better, I've used the 500 and like it/trust it.

I'm a little curious about the "A1" designation that applies to some of the 590s but not this "tactical"...but since I'm not really after anything military-grade, I'll Google that one later. :)

Thanks!

590 will have a heavy walled barrel, and both metal trigger guard and safety instead of plastic ones like on the 500.

590 A1 that is ....

590 has a "regular" weight barrel and plastic trigger trigger guard/frame.

the A1 has a heavier barrel and metal trigger frame.

Sorry, don't know the exact details between the 500 Persuader and the 590.

Spoke to a CGN sponsor/dealer this morning, looks like 500 Persuader I'm after has been discontinued. If the 590 Tactical (not an A1) is a plastic trigger guard and standard barrel LIKE a 500...it's probably the same gun for $75-ish more.

If anyone can confirm, I'd appreciate it! thanks.

Most importantly;

The receivers are exactly the same on all of them.

They are made on the same machines, with the same blueprints.

The only differences are the barrel-lug, and magazine tube.

Generally speaking. Mossberg 500s come with a closed end mag-tube, that cannot be extended.
While most 590s come with a capped mag-tube (like an 870) , which can be extended.

If you don't plan on adding a mag-tube extension, it won't matter to you.

Having said that; Mag-tubes are also swappable. You can just unscrew it from the receiver.
Brownells sells replacement tubes pretty cheap. In both 500 and 590 styles.

I have 2-500, 2-590 and 1-590A-1, one of the 590 has been changed to a 14" barrel, the 500 as was said has normal thickness barrel , as has the 590, the 590 and A-1 have the better mag lug that can take Ann extension but also makes it easier to swap out mag followers and springs! The 14" barrel kit and the 590A-1 have a heavy barrel which, in my opinion ( unless you are knocking down doors) is not necessary, and with a full mag, just makes it heavier than required! I like the 590 personally and if you can get it for a good price go for it, all depends on what you will be doing with it!

Thanks Bob. That 500 seemed like a good deal @ $429 new, but I see the 590 Tactical @ $499. Looks almost like the same gun, the 590 with a barrel 1-1/2" shorter. I think I'd still probably grab the 500 if I could find one new, or used at a good price.

They are all good, wait for sales, and you will get it even cheaper! I got a 500 magpul for $310 and a 590A1 mariner for $365. A couple months ago so take your time unless you need it yesterday!
