Sako 85 Grey Wolf?

Sako 85 hunter 30-06. Same issues. Would not extract empties positively. The empty cartridge would hit the windage cap and fall back into the action. Dealer took it back. Same issue with a sako 85 finnlight 300wsm. Both rifles were set up with the leupold rings and Kahles 3-9-42 scope. Also had a sako 85 finnlight 300 win mag that worked good with no issues. Not sako bashing, overall very well built rifles, just sharing my experience.

1 source claims this is a response from the manufacturer in regard to purported ejection issues:

"Occasionally, we receive customer complaints regarding Sako rifles ejecting spent cases that either strike the scope or strike the scope turret and fall back inside the action of the rifle. This situation is predominately caused by both the scope mounts and type of scope (particularly scopes with extended turrets) installed on the rifle. A secondary consideration is how rigorously the bolt is operated by the user.

Beretta will not consider rifles that exhibit the condition above to be a warranty issue. Provided that the rifle fully extracts and ejects the spent casing, the rifle will be considered functional and serviceable. Sako Arms cannot anticipate every possible scope mounting configuration when designing their rifles. Since the selection and installation of the scope and mounts are determined by the owner, it is the owner's responsibility to ensure that the system will not interfere with the operation of the rifle.

An extremely small number of rifles have been returned for service for this issue and our analysis has indicated that the combination of scope mounts, scope type and scope turret location in relation to the ejection path of the spent casing have been the proximate cause creating this condition. In order to alleviate this condition, we recommend that the owner try various scope mounting options to find the one that works best."

As mentioned in my earlier post, I have owned several Sakos (1980s-current) and they ALL had the same ejection issue.
And, in every case, the "scope mounting option" I used was Sako's own (very expensive) Optilocks and Leupold scopes.

My take, as someone who used to be a Sako collector, is that:
Sako designed their cartridge ejection, in the mid-20th century, to work perfectly with iron sights,
and never changed it when scopes became the standard
 
It seems Sako 85 Long action ejection problems are due to weak extractor springs. A weak extractor spring will cause an early case release and send it upwards instead of sideways. Gretanrifles sells extended springs that can be cut to length for custom extractor stiffness. Their Canadian distributor is Bighorn sales in BC. I'm hoping to get my hands on some and try them out. My 85 extracts fine but the case mouths get dinged against my scope rail. I'm hoping to see if the situation can be mitigated somewhat.
 
I have several 85s, including an 85L Bavarian in 375 that I dropped into a Greywolf laminate stock. I like the heavier laminate for the recoil. But, never yet encountered extraction problems. Beautiful accuracy from all of my 85s, cloverleaf groupings with most factory ammo. Love my 85s.

Sure they did. The 85 ejector is at 6 o'clock and the AV's is at 3 o'clock as shown in images. You just needed to install the proper mount and scope combo for trouble-free ejection as advised by the manufacturer.
 
85 has ejector at 6 so they could save 5 cents on making right and left handed actions with the same parts. This makes a fine Sako rifle an issue waiting to happen.

I had one, it wasn't ejecting. Once I've looked for that specific issue I found dozens of stories all other the place confirming that. A big part of the problem is that ejector is passive blade and the ejection depends greatly on the speed and force of the bolt as you cycle it back. But if you don't want to deal with dinged scope turrets, brass falling back into action and brass throat damaged - don't buy Sako 85, plain and simple.
 
My 85 Finnlight in 30-06 ejects fine but not with authority. With the scope off it throws empties across the room so the case is making contact. I read on 24 hour that a better spring solves or reduces the problem.
