IPSC and Pistol retention

Hello,

Thinking of getting a holster with Level 2 retention for my CZ. Looking at Level 2 as we are starting a dynamic rifle group at my range and it will be a lot of moving with rifle and holstered pistol and I don't want an OOPPPSS.

If I were to try an IPSC match in the future (maybe this summer) would I be required to have the Level 2 retention activated or can you just leave it off for the match and rely on the Level 1 (friction) like most holsters?

If you have level 2 retention you must have it on for the entire match. ex. if you have a snap covering the holster, it will have to be covered (and then you have to unsnap it and then draw). Obviously, this is wasted time.

If you are concerned about this, get a different holster for IPSC.

Thanks for the reply! I thought I recalled that from when I took my Black Badge. Thanks for confirming.

Woukd you recommend building 2 belt set ups or getting some sort of quick change holster mount?

It seems easy to me with Teklok to remove my holster from one belt to another. I do that for 3-gun. But I also have two different belt setups. I move my same holster from one to another. I have two different belt setups because the entire loadout is different from 3-gun to IPSC and it is more of a pain to swap every single other pouch from the same belt.
 
Just stick with level 1 retention and crank up the friction when you need it. There are quick adjust knobs available that work with Blade Tech or Comp-Tac holsters.

This rule makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Not only that; This rule is completely ignored when someone is using a race holster, which also has a locking feature.
(People always start with it unlocked.)
 
Haha yes I seem to recall this when I took my Black Badge. That is why I was curious about thumbreaks etc. It was funny when the guys with the race holsters would forget to unlock and then try to unholster.

I would love to get an explanation from someone as to the hypocrisy being applied with this rule.

Duty holster with locking device = must be locked at start signal.

Race holster with locking device = unlocked at start signal.
 
I have a red hill tactical level 2 thumb release holster for my tanfoglio. Works decent. solid.
 
That common notion - that one needs secondary retention to jump and run about safely - is not necessarily correct.

5.2.6 - Handgun matches must not require the use of a particular type or brand of holster or allied equipment. However, the Range Master may deem that a competitor’s holster is unsafe and order that
the item be improved to his satisfaction, failing which it must be withdrawn from the match. If a retaining strap or flap is attached to a holster and/or allied equipment, it must be applied or closed prior to issuance of the

Please post the rule indicating that a locking device must be locked.
As dexter has so indicated.
 
I have several different holsters that I use. I know it's a little more money, why not have two rigs, one dedicated to IPSC and it's rules, and one you can use for multi gun matches? I use a Bladetech holster for IPSC and a Blackhawk SERPA CQC for multi gun if I'm worried about a sling or something else getting caught on the pistol. In the long run, I just grab what I need and never have to worry about what's on the belt, where on the belt the kit is, or any other distractions before shooting a match.

I have never had an issue either way, and actually never had a hangup. The added .2 of a second or whatever it is to disengage the lock on the SERPA has never been the reason I "lost" a match or placed poorly. I have lots of other excuses I can pull out to justify a bad performance! ;)

The wording specifically applies to thumb-breaks on duty holsters, while it completely ignores the locks on race-holsters.

I would love to know why?
