Ruger Gunsite Scout in .450 Bushmaster

I also think that the development of shotguns with rifled barrels, sabot slugs etc are a compromise that was created due to hunting regulations, and a rifle is...well- a rifle. i don't have lots of experience with sabot/rifled barrel shotguns but I have shot them, and frankly I would prefer a rifle like this.

RUger has always been innovative, often giving people options they didn't know they wanted until presented, so I can see this working.Doubt I would buy one, but you never know. :)

Yeah I guess I see your point. I just can't help but think if I wanted to shoot something big and slow, a 12ga sabot pushing a 58cal, 385gr slug at 1900fps would be my choice... But I guess 16" rifled shotgun barrels aren't exactly commonplace either....

At any rate, I agree that its nice to see other options for lightweight short barrel bolt actions. I would absolutely love something like this in a more capable cartridge, but the 450 just doensn't tickle my fancy unless Im buying a range toy.

I don't think you know the extent of the specialized seasons down south nor the buying power of American gun owners who are demanding innovation around these rules

Yes, it's easy for us to forget the size of the customer base down in the states. The guy in that video was talking about the new regulatory changes that would allow the use of a gun like this in areas that have been shotgun- or muzzleloader-use only, and other states have similar restrictions. I don't know the exact figures, but it wouldn't be a shock to learn that each of those states represents a potential market as large as the entire Canadian market.

Speaking from the perspective of having been forced to use a shotgun for much of my deer hunting until fairly recently, I have to agree with Gatehouse about one thing: I would much prefer using this type of rifle (or any rifle) to any shotgun for my hunting.

When you used a shotgun for deer hunting, we're you using a proper slug gun with rifled barrel, sabot slugs, and adjustable rifle sights or a scope? While it's not my cup of tea, it seems with the proper kit 200yds is perfectly capable (someone around here uses a 20ga for moose, and takes shots over 200yds)

Specifically, what didn't you like about a shotgun that a rifle like this does better?
 
When I lived in the shotgun zone, I had a Savage 210, an H&R Ultra Slug (amazing gun!), a T/C Encore, and a Rem870 dedicated to slug use; all had rifled barrels and scopes, and you're right, 200 yards accuracy was achievable with all of them. I also played around with numerous smoothbores, some of which could go to 100 yards with their chosen ammo.

Each rifled gun needed to be fed its preferred brand of premium sabot ammo, discovered by extensive...or rather, expensive...testing. No reloading, except for playing around with the smoothbores. It was just like the trial-and-error method of finding the best rimfire load for a .22lr by trying as many as possible of the many choices available. The biggest difference was that premium sabot loads ran around $4 - $5 per shot; this was more than 5 years ago, so I assume they haven't gotten any cheaper in the interim.

I hunt deer now with traditional muzzleloaders, single shot centerfires, leverguns...I even sometimes dabble with the odd bolt gun. I don't shoot much further, if any, than I did back in my shotgun days. I simply enjoy it more. I like rifles; it's as simple as that.

There's way more to hunting than just killing a critter. Moose with a shotgun slug? Of course it can be done...but unless there were no other choice (i.e. legal restrictions), I would never insult a moose by killing it with a slug. :)

Length and weight come to mind first with a shotgun, then there is scope mounting issues with certain models, tubular magazine rater than detachable, etc

^^^^ This. I think a GSR in 450 Marlin would be the cats a$$ !! I think if it were chambered in 450Marlin the fad wouldn't wear off as fast .
