I love 38 Super. With an article by Stephen Hunter because he writes better than me.

I finally got to shoot my Super again after a winter of work and racer chasing. IMHO the 1911 is best when chambered in 38 Super.

Great article, thanks for that. Can you guess what caliber these are in?

Exactly Ganderite.
Johnnymac, beautiful. Mine is older Series 70 with tiny sights and blued. I may try to find a new production one with "modern" sights at some point. Colt still lists it as available.

yea, but if you get a 38super be sure and get a RECENT one- the old ones headspaced off the semi-rim ,not the head, and would fall off that rim sometimes- in the old days ( which I can proudly say) you'd be shooting and gun would fall off, resulting in pie plate groups even with hand loads
now the way to cure this would be to re-chamber a 9mm barrel or get a barrel from NOvak , but as she came from the box, it was a TERRIBLE shooter- just something to watch out for
this and word of mouth are 2 reasons that the super never caught on- that and you had to go to something like the Mexican police for surplus

Interesting article, he mentions the Kansas City Massacre. It is always interesting to visit a place where an event occurred that changed so much.

I have been to KC a number of times and usually find my way to the Union Station where the Massacre occurred to check out the bullet pock marks in the stone front of the building. Just across the street is the National World War I Museum and Memorial, another great place to visit.

The 38 Super was very popular also with Texas Rangers as there are a number of them in their museum in Waco Texas. Must be the Mexico connection.

I have never owned one, only had 1911's in .45 and 9 mm, but have seen many IPSC Open shooters using them in their compensated 1911's.

I have a 1911 in 7.62x25. It uses 38 Super mags. Very very accurate with M1 Carbine bullets or the lead SWC bullets made for the 32.

Very nice. I wish someone made a dedicated 1911 in 7.62. I think those conversions have dried up. Are you reloaded to a shorter OAL so they fit properly in the mag?

Yes, seat the bullets deeper. Same OAL as a Super.

For surplus ammo, I push them in a bit deeper, too. To shoot surplus, a stronger hammer spring is required.
