you're right, it was grey. I had mine ceracoated black.

Kuiu has a DIY water printing kit I was thinking of taking the stock Finnish off and putting a Kuiu vista pattern on it

I just picked up a McMillan carbon fibre stock hydro dipped in Kryptek Highlander and it seems to be tough as nails, doesn't have a clear coat either.

That is normal. It is a very soft and thin finish.
