ive just finished chambering a 22-250 and was looking at the reamer and thinking (more like dreaming) could a 22-250 reamer be run in .200 to .300 deeper to have more case volume? hence a custom 1 off wildcat. i am an amature at chambering rifles and only do it for myself. could this be done and still be safe to shoot?

I'm planning to do exactly this one of these days using a 40-65 reamer. Run it in an extra 0.300" to the length of necked down 45-90 2.4" case and it's just about exactly a 40-82.

One issue I have that you wouldn't is removing or cutting back the part that cuts the rim recess.

What c ase would you use?

If you want more capacity, use a 22-250 Ackley reamer. That way you can use regular brass. But, in my experience, barrel life is only 1000 rounds.

One issue with doing this is what do you do for a sizing die?
Can you get your current sizing die to work?

Where does the brass neck go when you run the reamer deeper? You lose it...

Too tapered a case is the 22-250... after fire forming, the brass would have a very bulgy rear portion and you would have to make the brass from something longer to obtain a neck... You are better off having a reamer made to specifications for what you want to do.

The 22-250 case has too much taper to run it in much deeper without ending up way big at the base. I have run some reamers in to gain capacity but only on cases which had not much taper and never deeper than about 1/4 inch. I have run a 308 in 6mm deep and formed cases from 8x57 brass. This gives me a capacity about mid-way between the 308 and the 30/06. This allows me to boost 308 performance with out loading too hot. Whether or not it shoots any better than a 30/06, I can't say. The truth is, wildcats usually don't accomplish anything like what the originator might wish for.

There is already a cartridge identical to what you desire. 22 Cheetah.

There isn't very much out there that hasn't been done.

my 22-250 reamer was bought used and it is not tapered all the way largerst part of the reamer is .4841 i just lookind at the 22 cheetah its only about .120 longer and .037 at the shoulder im thinking of going .300 deeper would end up somthing like a 220 howell

Measure the head diameter of the cases you plan on adapting. You might find them as small as .468". You might get a dramatic expansion ring.

I might be able to live with a .472" chamber diameter at the base but I certainly wouldn't want any more than that. Of course, you could use 6.5x55 brass and be able to go a bit bigger.
