Blew It On A Wolf - Season 8

Coyotes 3, Hunters 0

Latest update - took a couple of new guys out a week ago and had wolf pack howl back at us but no show on the hydro line - was definitely a neat experience for them, especial as it was the first time predator hunting for one of them. Then a buddy from Michigan was up for a long weekend and we had wolf action on Wednesday at the beaver flood blind and at the hydro line. Nothing to speak of the following day which was his first full day of hunting.

On Friday he went with one of our partners for wolves while Gunner410 and I stayed in town to see if we could find a couple of coyotes as Gunner410 didnt start work till noon. The township bylaw amendment lists only the 7 individuals authorized to hunt in the two locations n the municipality. We drove into the snow dump and I parked my truck across the east entrance of a snowshoe trail at first legal light. Gunner410 asked why i was parked there and I told him so that any snowshoer that came along would know we were in there. Gunner410 looked up the trail and said "there's two" and I said "What, snowshoers?". he said "No two coyotes". They were standing about 20 feet away looking at the truck. They took off into the bush so I bailed out and grabbed the hand calls and shotgun. I ran up the road and got up on a snowbank and tried some rabbit in distress calls but no joy. The snowshoe trail looped and came out further west on the driveway so we hustled up there in case they ran the loop. When we got there "gunner410 told me to look back down the drive and the two coyotes crossed the road in front of the truck heading west.

Gunner410 set up where he could watch another trail on the side they ran into and I scooted around to watch the snow dump area where the trail came out. After a few minutes one of them popped out on the crest of the ridge. I got the shotgun up and sighted on it but he was too far too shoot. I hit the Primos Alpha Dogg which was set up about 100 yards away with a lone female howl and the coyote looked that way and made a few steps. Then it went over the edge of the dump and down the trail out of sight. Then the second coyote showed up and followed the path of the first.

I figured I wasnt going to call them back up the hill so I went and got Gunner410 and placed him closer to where they had come out in case a third followed the same path. Turns out one of them ran by on the trail he was watching but he couldnt get a shot. I used various calls for the next hour (we can only hunt till 9:30 AM at these spots) and then walked over to Gunner410. He told me he saw a third coyote come along the ridge mousing but there was too much timber in the way to take a shot. I paced out 80 yards from where I was sitting to where I had the coyotes in my sights. We are using 3" magnum BB's followed by SSG's and I didnt feel that was an ethical shot to make so I passed.

The rest of the weekend was uneventful with no coyotes or wolves being seen in spite of some pretty intense hunting effort by the group.

Have been away for a lot of February and havent done much hunting. Threw some really nasty carcasses from a trapper last week on the hydro line and pulled the trail camera yesterday to find pictures of wolves and coyotes at the bait. I went out this afternoon wth my daughter who has been out with me baiting and checking cameras, but who had never actually hunted with me for predators.

When we got set up I found out that the batteries in the remote were dead so i tried some hand calls. After a while I realized that the batteries in my sit and spin decoy would work in the handset so i got up and grabbed it from where I had it set up. As soon as I sat down a nice black wolf crested the ridge about 500 yards away. I tried some hand calls but it didn't pay any attention. I dug the batteries out of the decoy and as soon as I put them in the remote control it set off the Foxbang and the caller played a pup in distress call. The wolf looked our way and started down the ridge. It was mousing and sniffing some small shrubs, but wouldn't commit to coming closer to us.

I tried some rabbit in distress calls but it just wandered along the bottom of the ridge. We watched it for close to 10 minutes before it walked into the treeline. We hunted for another hour and then pulled the pin and headed back to town. As we were driving in My72jeep texted me and said he was putting out bait on the line. We texted back what we had seen. As we got home he texted again saying that he checked where we were and another wolf was standing on the line about 200 yards away from where were set up. He just got it in his cross hairs when 3 snowmobiles came along scaring the wolf into the trees. Total time between when we left and he saw the wolf was no more than a half hour.....

Before I left for Florida, I put a trail camera behind our back fence as the dogs are always running to the fence and barking (as I am sure my next door neighbor knows!). I have seen coyote tracks there regularly so I thought I would try out a new camera that I received in exchange for a defective one I sent back to the company. We had a blast of snow on Tuesday and i noticed fresh coyote tracks behind the fence so I pulled the camera. When I say behind the fence I mean no more than 2 feet behind our back fence. Here are some of the videos that you might enjoy. They are pretty clear and there are a couple of sequential videos clearly showing a second coyote following along a few seconds after the first.

Edit Photobucket is being a PITA and I only managed to get one video uploaded:

Also a neat picture from My72Jeeps trail camera on the powerline with 3 coyotes in front of it:

Wolf 1 me 0
My wife and I were out on Friday March 17 as we both had the day off and nadda. So back out at 7:45 Saturday morning temp was -3 light snow. She was facing west I was east, been out just under the hour when I decided to try the yote in distress as its late in the season. Sure enough a wolf steps out of the tree line to see what's going on, just shy of 300 yrds. Now I'm sighted for 100 yrds. I've never out side of the military with my FN C1 never shot over 200, first round hit 30 yrds short. The wolf did not even flinch second shot hit 10 feet short and kicked up a puff of snow and off he goes. I'm 1 hit and a miss, my wife is 1 for 1 guess who is not letting me live that down..... So Sunday back out.

Coyotes in the morning, rainbows in the evening

Yesterday morning went out with My72jeep's brother in law to the hydro line for end of season last push as season ends Friday until next September. Set up with him on the lower line and me on the ridge. Had been calling on and off for about 90 minutes starting with some wolf howls at first followed by rabbit in distress calls every 15-20 minutes. I had just finished a call when a coyote walked out on the left side of the line and sat in the middle of the groomed snowmobile trail about 250 yards away. Although it could be argued it's not a maintained right of way for public travel this late in the season, I wasn't going to shoot it there.

I tried another call and as I dropped the hand set it set off the Foxbang with the pup in distress call started on the caller. Just like in videos, the coyote spun around and started running towards me. It was due east of me and I was getting blinded by the sun in the scope. I saw it run into a patch of raspberries and tall grass on the other side of the trail. It ran in a circle in patch and then I lost it in the glare of the sun. It didn't cross onto my side of the trail and I did not see it again.

When I got home a friend called and asked if I wanted to go rainbow trout fishing in Lake Superior so I tied up a bunch of spawn sacks. Caught a nice chrome male and cooked up for supper tonight. Retirement sucks:d

Thats it till the fall. Wiped down the .22-250 and back into the cabinet until the end of deer season. I went out yesterday AM for the last morning - was a bit of confusion as I thought someone was going with me. Set up on my usual ridge and at 8:00 AM, out walks the same coyote as the day before on my side of the trail. Get him in the scope, looks pretty small and I realize if I shoot him I am tagged out for the season and cant hunt till net January 1 - so I let him walk.

See you in season 9 - here are some trail cam pics I pulled off the camera last week- give that big black one another summer to feed and get bigger!

Disregard the dates the cam reset its self during a cold snap when it shut down.
how is putting the bait in those buckets work does the bait last longer. when we put out a carcass for bait it didnt last long birds seem to chew it up in no time didnt much time tell the carcass is completely chewed to the bone.

We get meat scraps from the grocery store and freeze them into the pails. It makes the birds work at getting the scraps out and we mainly want the commotion made by scavenger birds attracting the predators. My72jeep drill3d a bunch of 1.5 inch holes in one pail which allowed the birds to peck the bait through the sides and that worked well.
