I have a Ruger Hawkeye laminated stock that I want to drop a few ounces off of. I'm wanting to put a couple of bore holes in the butt under the recoil pad. I know walnut stocks have been given this treatment and am wondering if anyone has done it to a laminate?

I drilled two 13/16" and two 11/16" holes in but stock plus milled series if grooves in forearm under the barrel dropping the weight whole 8oz.
That's almost all that can be done IMHO except one additional hole under the grip.

I used a forstner. But I don't think it matters much - auger bit, spade but, forstner I would use whatever you have on hand.

You aren't drilling all that deep it - take it easy and you should be fine.

But coming out the side wouldn't be all that much fun...

I hung mine off the front of my milling machine table. You may want to take it over to Chris and do it on his. You can get everything clamped perfectly aligned and then just go for it. Afterwards you could mill out the "webs" if so desired.

Yeah,....you could end up with a thumbhole stock....:)

I would say watch the balance. I hollowed out the stock on my Cooey model 82 and I lost weight but not maybe in the right spot. Still has that long heavy barrel on it.

What you want to do is hollow out the butt, seal it well, and fill it with helium. If still too heavy, just attach some balloons. On windy days (if you ever have those), just cut 'em loose.
