Are there any SKS muzzle breaks that aren't huge POS?

Not going for those sh1t ass chinese muzzle breaks off ebay...
Is there anywhere I can get a legit and effective muzzle break for my SKS? Not threaded as I don't want any permeneant modifications on the rifle. I'm kind of a purist.

The short NCstar pin on brake..... best brake for your needs!

had one on my SKS for YEARS, it treated me well.

To break or not to break? I feel your pain lol I've tried a couple personally on my sks and their crap. I don't even like the thread on one's for my VZ 58. Like fraserdw said it changes the balance too much. So IMO don't waste your money on them. Make it simple make it work!

I get a chuckle out of the knuckleheads who think that muzzle brakes are all about recoil reduction.

The big benefit in an intermediate calibres is that it reduces (virtually eliminates) muzzle flip allowing you to keep the rifle on target, and giving much faster follow up shots. There's a reason why the AR guys put on muzzle brakes, and it has nothing to do with recoil. It's all about keeping the barrel flat when popping off shots rapid fire on the same target.

I tested a few on a CZ-858 a while ago... Here's a splice of the results of the "rapid fire" test. The first 5 shot string is with no brake, the second with just a flash hider, the 3rd through 6th strings are with various brakes:

With no brake or just the flash hider, the gun isn't exactly pushing me around, but I do lose a moment between each trigger pull re-acquiring the target. With all four of the brakes, however, the barrel stays flat and on target, and I can pretty much shoot (and hit what I'm pointing at) as fast as I can pull the trigger.

As for the OP's question:

I've tried a couple of different brakes on the SKS, and they pretty much all sucked. They worked OK, while they stayed on, but they all worked loose eventually and became un-intended projectiles when they became mis-aligned and a bullet caught them and took them along for a ride.

Really, the only way to have an effective brake is to thread the barrel for one.

Cheers.

the spatha beastiarriiii ( can never spell it right ) works, little pricey but i was lucky to get on it when there was a 50% off christmas sale.....no muzzle rise, recoil is tamed but you have to check it every couple hundred rounds because it will need tightening..... i had mine on for 5-600 rounds then it went downrange one day not damaged....havent re-installed it yet but very solid piece

I got the Choate cleaning-rod-pin one from Alliedarms.ca it works great IMHO

This is the best design I encountered. Although more of a birdcage flash hider than a brake though.
They will trap fouling, and residual corrosive salts, so regimental removal and cleaning is needed.

Mine didn't seem to have any effect. Its the NCStar pin on one from earlier in the thread. It looks cool I guess, but I don't notice a difference shooting with or without it so took it off for good to save weight and reduce the OAL. I don't know... The sks hardly has any recoil or muzzle jump to begin with. It's easily the softest shooting gun I've owned besides rimfire stuff. Muzzle break on it just seems pointless.
