I decided to do a proper load development on my Tikka T3 270 win, all I had was IMR4350, so I loaded up some 130gr Sierra SBT and Barnes TSX with IMR4350. The result from the first test are less than ideal. At 100m, Sierra SBT grouped around 1.25'' to 0.75'' with 4 shots, the Barnes grouped between 2'' to 1'', which is unacceptable for hand loads. I remembered last summer, the rifle was grouping 4 shots around 0.75'' at 100 yards, and that was with 2 test loads (51 &55gr).
Here is what have changed since last summer:
1st, last month I took the stock off for the first time, discovered the recoil lug has an indent from the action's recoil, and the lug fit lose in the stock (recoil lug is 0.015'' smaller than the stock), so I epoxy the lug into the stock.
2nd, the IMR4350 is about 1 year old, it was stored in the basement.
3rd, after the first load test, I inspected the rifle, find the barrel is touching the stock 2.5'' from the tip of the stock. I shaved off some plastic with my pocket knife, now the barrel is free floating. ( I didn't shave off the two contact points, if the rifle still doesn't shoot well, I will shave them off )

my QUESTION for you: what could cause my accuracy issue, other possible cause? and what powder would you recommend for 270 Win (Sierra & Barnes) in a average Tikka?

I don't believe it's the bullet's issue, my 223Rem Tikka shot both Sierra and Barnes well, it put 3 Barnes TSX in the same hole in the first load test, and the hole is a tinny bit bigger than a 30 cal bullet hole. The primers are new CCI LR... Please help...any advice?

For me and many others, it's H4831. Nothing beats it for me, thought I've only used it in three different .270's so far. One only needs so many!

H4831 is, and has been, the go to powder for the 270 since Jack O'Connor's days.
I use 60-61 grains behind the 130's, 58-59 behind the 150's.
For the 140 Accubond, though, my Vanguard S2 likes Vihtavuori N165 a lot, so I use it with that bullet only. Dave.

All the above mention powders work well with the 270 win with 130 to 150 gr bullets. but if you would like more speed with accuracy try some Rl17 max load and 140gr Nosler BT or there accubonds at + or - 3000 fps average, FED gold match primers
Rifle Rem 700 older model factory original barrel at 22" that Hart had trued action and trigger at 1.5 lbs little light for a hunting gun but only use this a s a bean- field gun
Brass Winchester, primer pockets uniformed.
Using a Leupold 2.5 to 8x with Boone & Crocket reticule and using the small cross hair as opposed to main thicker reticule.
100 yards all bullets touching .380" and at 300 yards just under 2"
Taken two white tails at just over 500 yards.
I don't like using any RL powders and some others that are double base as they are hard on throats with a lot of firings because they develop much more heat.
But for a hunting rifle works okay

My Win 70 SS FWT doesn't care as long as it's propelling a 130gr at 2900-3000fps .57gr of IMR 4831 is my standard load.........Harold

Yup...4831...But I prefer IMR4831 because with the velocities I am after you can't get enough H4831 in the case as it is slightly slower burning then the IMR4831...Unless you don't mind very compressed loads.

Always had better velocity and groups with IMR4831 before pressure signs started too show up as well.

Well - I would play around with bullet weights, unless you're stuck on 130 gr. Guns will preferentially tune to a particular weight. Also, the recoil lug should have some clearance on all sides (and bottom), except the contact face.

Thanks, that's a good direction to look into.

Seems like 4831s are getting all the love, I only hunt within 300 yards, velocity isn't much of an issue for me, which 4831 is more stable across normal temperature range (-5C to 25C)

X2 I have found the same thing applies in my two 270 Win's.

I always used H4831SC in my 270"s ,I did have a Browning BAR in 270 that preferred the H4350,I have a friend with a 270 Mossberg that shoots good groups using imr4350 and he has used aa4350 with good luck also.I wouldn't discount the 4350 if that's all you have.

The barrel wasn't free floated, the last test loads were inconclusive, I'm going to do another test. I thought now might be a good time to reconsider powder choice.
