Best 1911 commander or RO for $1500 al in?

I would hold out for the Springfield over the Remington or Ruger. The adjustable sights are worth the small price difference especially if you intend to try various loads. Second choice would be a Colt Competition. If you prefer the 'tactical' type sights then I would rate the Colt first as they've got the low drag look but are still adjustable. You can then also use the phrase, "if it ain't a pony it's a phoney!". I disagree but still find it humorous.

LOL I was thinking the same thing about the CZ comment. I'm agreeing about the Springfield.. however, and big upside down smile... I've got quotes as much as 4 months to get a stainless springfield in stock from a few places. I think what I'm going to do is grab Remington R1 Enhanced off Cabelas in the mean time just to quell the havent-bought-a-new-gun-in-a-few-weeks urge.

Being still kinda new to the sport, I have a feeling I will be one of those guys with an entire safe full of 1911's in a few years.

I got my stainless RO from I Run Guns. They still have some in stock. Doesn't come out to be much more (may actually be a few dollars cheaper) than buying from a LGS which I would have done if I could have found one.

If you place your order before April 15, you should get by mid May.

Still seems $100 above the average, and its not the stainless :(

Well it will fill up with something. I used to think I'd have a bunch of nice 1911's and BHP's then the Sig X-series and P210's came into my life. Damn things have multiplied like rabbits and displaced all but one of the 1911's. My only advice is buy quality.

That's not too bad a wait in the Canadian firearms market. Seems some companies only re-stock once a year.

Well its about to fill up with a Ruger SR1911 Target model :D I had the Remington Enhanced in the shopping cart of Cabelas.... but I just wasn't feeliin it afterall...and so beings the 1911 journey
 
Congrats! A few of the guys at my range have the Rugers and seem to be very happy with them. In the several thousand rounds I've seen them shoot I can't remember seeing a single stoppage be it factory ammo or hand loads. Enjoy the journey.

Thank you. I think what did it for me was considering how as some say, the price creep on the R1's, so for an extra $50 the Ruger seemed to have a lot more to offer.

I've owned two rems. R1 enhanced SS, commander and gov. I found both ,just a bit better than my buddies Ruger.
Bit tighter,bit more accurate as well.
And they both had adjustable sights.
One went to Colt gold cup owner and the other to a ruger owner.
Both guys liked the rem better:)

To throw a wrench in here....

Have you shot a Commander version 1911 vs a 5in 1911??

I have never been a fan of the Commander platform.
The 1911 is well balanced and shoots well as a 5in gun. Commander versions have pronounced muzzle flip vs a similar 5in gun as well as obviously a shorter sight radius. The 1911 also doesn't ride in a holster as well in Commander length as the gun weight becomes imbalanced to the grip/magazine/ammo area and there isn't enough weight or leverage below the beltline to stay where it should. This is quite pronounced depending on the holster type.

Particularly in Canada where obviously the gun is deployed and played with at the range exclusively.....Commanders make no sense and are a negative in every way.

The only compact 1911 platform that makes sense to me is the CCO version where a commander length slide is mated to a Officers gripframe. IF one has is carrying a 1911 this platform provides a shorter grip which conceals better, prints far less and preserves the muzzle forward balance of a 5in 1911. IF I had the luxury/opportunity to carry a 1911 it would be a full size 5in but if print/conceal issues were a factor it would be a CCO version.

MY 2c worth on Commander 1911's.

As for pistols....there is so much choice out there in good 1911's it comes down to what's attractive to your eye/what's available/how much yer willing to pony up.
Basically the $400~$700 guns...then a huge array of decent quality/featured guns in the $800~$1200 range....then there's a step up to $1500~$2000 range. And then Premium serious expensive guns with quality/fit/finish/features and pedigree to go with.

As far as quality/performance/reliability you can pretty much stop in the $1500~$2000 range...poss even cheaper.... and get superlative 1911 performance. Spending further won't nec get any better gun...but pedigree/details/finish etc get pretty damn fine.
 
say what you want about commander sized 1911's.
not everyone has baseball mitt sized hands.

for me the commander is just the right size.

same as how the G19 is just a bit better than the G17, for me.
 
The Commander has the same gripframe and all other dimensions as a full size 1911...it simply has a shorter slide/barrel length.
Has nothing to do with hand size or grip length/ergos....the commanders have shorter overall length.... with commensurate sight radius and barrel.

Only the Officers and compact versions of 1911's have shorter grips.
