A 22-284 Build....The Baboon Slayer...Done Now With Pics

See I didn't even know you could sport hunt walruses. I mean't more along the lines of it is no longer a time where it acceptable to write about gunning down walruses with your 1911 in National Geographic.

Well no, you couldn't WRITE about it............

Sorry about my slight change of path, but on a somewhat related topic to the original thread, I have a small request. A while back, as I recall, you posted a list of sorts of wildcat projects/calibres you had on the books or on the go. Any chance you could post that list again, with some basic details?

Well Johnn, let's see what I got on the go.............22-284, 23 cal family of which only the 23-284 has been done, and now needs to be redone on a good action, still the pipsqueak on a Mod 7 action, the lynx, the hyrax on short 700 actions and of course THE PENGUIN !!! It's going on a long Vanguard S1 action. Then I'm making cases, and have to make up the dies and will soon be working load data for my 458 Ruger Imp. I have the 1/2 chambered 8X68 Imp on the FN commercial mauser (need to get my reamer sharpened to finish it). My 375 Wby on the Sako L61R action. Brass is fireformed and loads are made, just have to bed it before I bench it. I have to finish lengthening the magazine well and mag box for my 340 Wby Mod 70 SG.
So really I don't have that much on the go right now, the biggest time consumer will be contouring the 23 cal barrels as they are just 1 5/16" bars with rifled holes in 'em right now. Future projects may include a 416 WSM on a short 700 action with a 20" barrel.......maybe get it full stocked. I still have a .475 barrel that is crying to be something cool, a 375 RUM barrel that's looking for an action, which I happen to have, and a 243 barrel that thinks it wants to be a 6mm WSM......maybe.

I'm betting faster downhill lol. How about flat land?. Figure my brothers wife is in the same weight class and a heads up on a top speed may keep me safe should I ever be ahead of her in a buffet line

I think in comparing her to a walrus you may be underestimating her........I have seen them move deceptively fast more like a bull bison. They look all big and lethargic till you get 'em riled up or in view of a buffet.........then they can move and maneuver with blinding speed and deadly intent. If one pulls in behind you at the buffet line it's most prudent to pull out of line and circle around behind these very dangerous beasts......Like a grizzly on a kill, never, never, ever get between them and their food..........

Thanks Douglas. Basically what I was looking for is what defines the following or what are they the result of or made up from or based on. Some of the more defining basic or details of.
- Pipsqueak
- Lynx
- Hyrax
- Penguin
:redface: Sorry for being a pest.

Johnn........

Pipsqueak = 23-222 Rem Mag (204 Ruger)

Lynx = 23-250 Sav or 22-250 case

Hyrax = 23-243

Penguin = 23X55........based on a 6.5X55

Douglas = 23-284 Win

I am considering changing the pipsqueak to possibly the 5.6X50 case, same boltface but quite a bit more capacity and it's a real oddball, just what I like!!!!!

:d Perfect. Much appreciated. That's exactly the info I was looking for :) . I had a Ruger No. 1 heavy Varmint barrelled in 22-250 but that went to my young Son in the B.C. central interior for use, 'primarily', on Coyotes. Your 'Douglas' 23-284 Win looks interesting. The only item I have anywhere close is the old custom Winchester High Wall in 219 Donaldson Wasp that has taken the place of the 22-250. It has a matching vintage 10X J.UNERTL scope.

And as luck would have it, it seems to be very fond of 50gr Hornady V-MAX reloads. And, the brass is formed from 30-30. :d .:d .

Had a long chat with Jerry at Mystic and he gave me some good ideas. First he said the Swift Scirroco comes in a 75 gn 22 cal with the same BC as the 80 gn Sierra and a much heavier jacket..........definitely worth a try in the 1-8 barrel. Then there is a 62 gn Barnes TTSX that I should be able to get about 4200 fps from the 1-12 barrel and it should have no problems staying together and may stabilize at 252,000 RPM.........not a great BC though.......probably smear copper so bad that I won't get 10 shots before the barrel is fouled so bad it won't hit the paper..........had this problem with my 257 Wby.
I'm liking the idea of the 75 gn Swift, just hope it shoots well....not being a match bullet. I was just looking at Hornady's website and noticed they make a 70 gn GMX............Anybody ever use the GMX bullets? How do they shoot in other calibers?

I remember seeing some 75 gr scirocco's in the .224 bin just the other day......

I don't actually remember when or where I bought them... recently judging by the price tag!

Need a box or 2? Heck I'd mail out 20-30 pieces just for kicks, so you can try before you buy more.....

Cheers!

That would be outstanding, PM me and let me know how much for bullets and postage.

Thanks much.

I had great success accuracy wise with swift scirrocco2 in 25/06. Never shot any game though. Unfortunately they grouped far off from my vmax loads whereas the interlock load shot same poi at 100 yards so I made the switch
The swift is a very tough bullet
Pricey though
