Help Me Remember a Deer Hunting Book Title, Please!

Never ceases to amaze me how many books have been written on deer hunting. Very simple actually, take gun in hand, find deer and shoot.

I have an old book that 'may' be what you're looking for. The American Deer Hunter by Francis E. Sell. Published by Stackpole And Heck, Inc and a 1950 copyright.

Thank you for the suggestion Johnn, I have The American Deer Hunter by Francis Sell in my collection already, but I remember the writing style of my past book as being very similar. I know Sell wrote some other deer hunting books and will research them as they may be the one I am searching for.

^ Great book.

OP. Leonard Lee Rue III has written many books on Whitetail Deer. One of his earlier works, The World of the White-tailed Deer, was published in 1962 and I believe he was based in New Jersey then.

Some of his later books, The Deer of North America (1978), Whitetails (1991), Deer Hunting Tips and Techniques (2007), Whitetail Savvy (2013) are packed with information and are great reads. He's also written on raccoons and grouse amongst other game.

Lee rue also penned the forward for Robert Wegner's three book work, Deer and Deer Hunting, Books 1, 2 and 3, 1984, 1987, 1990. Wegner's stuff is, IMO, the best work out there, followed closely by Lee Rue's.

For a classic read find a copy of The Still Hunter by Theodore S Van Dyke, first published in book form in 1882.

Hi Pete, I pulled out my copy of The Deer Hunter's Guide, while it is not the exact book I am looking for, there are sections that I remember reading. I may be looking for a "Ghost Book", that is a combination of old-time deer hunting books that I have read!

I have read one of Rue's later books but did not know of earlier versions, I will look for them on the net. Thanks, WK

A lesser known title, yet still seems to fit the OP's time frame & description: WHITETAIL ... Fundamentals and Fine Points for the Hunter by George Mattis.

Don't believe it was Larry (Lawrence) Koller's book Shots at Whitetails ... although the right time frame, Larry was a die-hard Savage 99 fan and very much favoured the 250-3000/250 Savage.

I solved the quest for the Deer Hunting book I was searching for. First I google searched my old retired coworker and sent a message to his email. He responded with a few book titles and I figured out that I was looking for the book "Stalking Deer" by Don Groves 1986. I then placed a WTB post and was lucky that a fellow CGN member had a copy to sell, Thanks You Mannie!

This is an excellent oldtime deer hunting how-to book if you can find a copy; I suggest you start now, it took me over 20 years.
