Steyr Scout input sought

I just imported a scout, a steyr ching sling and the cartridge holder through ns. As a matter of fact, it has been so recent I haven't been able to make it down to get it yet.

It took 3 months from start to finish after no dealer would order the configuration I wanted, or I got ignored (i emailed and called every local dealer and some out of province to try to get what I wanted in caliber and stock - Not one dealer wanted my money enough to entertain my request re: caliber and colour)

Unless you're telling me they don't have my gun and parts, and when i go pick it up sometime next week it'll somehow get lost. I doubt that.

To add, NS still shows here. https://www.steyr-mannlicher.com/en/retailer/

If they lost their distributorship, it would have been really recent, definately not for the last 2 years

EDITED TO ADD: Maybe Vault also picked up the line? It's not indicated anywhere that it's an exclusive distributorship. I will also concede that they could have switched distributorships after my order sometime between now and 3 months ago.

It is recent, very recent. North Sylva was horrible to deal with for every single item they supposedly import. If it is not something they stock normally you are sol.

NS is clearing out what little stock they have now

Personally I found North Sylva very responsive to enquiries. I imagine it would get tiresome however responding to incessant questions from folks who don't end up purchasing the product they wanted information about.

Try ordering something through them they do not normally stock and see what happens

I had SSG 69 magazine broken right out of the box. I found out about it with the dealer while picking up the rifle, so we sent it back as warranty right away.

Long story short - it took North Sylva about 8 to 9 months to get me the replacement magazine. All that time as the dealer was calling them on my behalf to find out the status, the magazine was "in stock, we are sending it to you right away".

OwlOwl..you mentioned on another thread that you had an SSG69 with a 'gritty' action which some of us had never experienced....was this the same rifle? If so..would you mind saying who was the dealer you purchased it from?

Yes it was the same rifle. Looked as a legit Steyr ))

Dealer was Ellwood Epps. I have ZERO issues with Epps. They didn't have it in stock. I asked them to do a special order. Highly unlikely that the dealer was a source of the problem.

On one of the dealer site, i just saw a Scout Steyr OD green in 223, it might be a nice add on to my herd... JP.

Yes Epps seem to have a good reputation. The rifle in the pic is not stock of course as you know ... looks like the 'Styria Arms' floorplate and magazine conversion kit has been installed. Was this your rifle?

So can I expect a lot of scout reviews coming in shortly? 0.5 MOA at 100m, 10 round 300m challenge and all that? ))

Yes this is my "gritty" rifle in practically virgin condition. Styria Arms bottom, $700 CAD upgrade, don't even remind me about that. Well, if I didn't have it right away I would be even more upset about broken magazine out of the box that could not be replaced in a year )))

By the way, you can see blueing coming off the extractor. That was one of the spots the bolt was rubbing against the action.

Over-engineered and complicated, expensive/scarce magazines (although not $150 apiece, despite what the current ad in the EE suggests...), a bit dated...but still a very easy gun with which to become infatuated. I am not a fan of the .308 or detachable magazines for hunting, but the Scout is just so handy, comfortable and "shootable" that it seems to find its way into my hands much of the time. Mine has always been a sub-MOA rifle, the trigger is superb and there have been no mechanical problems at all. I'm probably 2000 rounds or so into it now. I've probably killed more coyotes with it than any other rifle I own. In terms of value for money, the Savage Scout is way out front, offering most of the performance for a small fraction of the money; if you can shoot it without actually having to look at it, I suppose the butt-ugly Ruger Scout would probably fall into the same category. But the Steyr just has a certain charm and mystique to it that the others don't. :) I'm so pleased with it that I am seriously considering the purchase of one of the new heavy-barrel ProHunters with full-length pic rail...just because.

One glitch with the Steyr Scout: they still have that ridiculous Weaver-spec rail on it rather than a proper Picatinny. Lots of Pic-spec rings won't fit. It's really my only complaint with this gun.

Yes, must be really tiresome answering questions on products that you have the privilege of offering to the masses. Like, it's your only role in the chain and it is so hard to answer these trivial time wasting questions from people wanting to buy $1,000+ items that only you can offer.

Try their opposite numbers in say the US or even the UK, give them a call and ask them the same questions. You will get an answer in a fraction of the time, and a definitive statement on stock / availability too.

Sad fact is they do represent some really good manufacturers, so until there is a wake up call moment business will carry on as usual.

Candocad.
