My search skills have failed me, can anyone recommend a pistol smith to freshen up a 1911? Looking at possibly a new barrel, re coating and tighten slide-a general rebuild I guess. New to pistols and not sure who does good work up here.

Live in BC but don't mind shipping for a good smith.

Thanks

Just check out the numerous threads about Armco, you may want to reconsider sending your pistol there. Dlask Arms or Dark International are alternatives.

I have always been extremely impressed with Armco 's work and am personally intimately familiar with some the challenges folks have had, but all that said I have another 1911 there as I type this because the work they do is great. You just can't be in a hurry to get your stuff back ;)

Do whatever. It shouldn't take six months to have sights replaced on a 1911, especially when the sights are supplied with the pistol. Then take another month to get the pistol back because the work has not been done and with no timeline when the work will be done. Lots and lots of stories just like that. YMMV.

Casey at Tacord (in Ont.) is top notch, and a hell of a nice guy to boot. You'll never hear a bad word about his work on this forum

Paul Barrette at ReddNobb.com

He's been building championship winning 1911s for over 25 years.

+ 1 for Paul Barrette.
I believe he worked at Springfield Custom Shop in the 80s.
I have two of his works, one a total ground up build. Phenomenal workmanship
Joe Dlask does some nice work as well.

Depending on what you need done and when they can deliver it by: all three listed are good, competent gunsmiths. I've used all 3 over the decades.

Having said that: if I had my druthers, I'd go to Paul. This is not meant as a slight to Clarence or Gunnar, simply that Paul's work was above and beyond.
