Turk rifles are the true Rodney Dangerfield's of the Mausers. Even more under appreciated than the South American Mausers once were.

The Turks used every Mauser variation that was built to my knowledge. They loved the platform. Many people look at them and curl up their noses. WRONG.

The vast majority of these rifles have seen battle action to some extent. They have been reasonably well maintained and used regularly for their entire military lifespan. If those old girls could talk??????????

The variation the OP shows is one of the later 98 actions. Whether it was made in that model originally is another question.

I will let the OP do his own due diligence as to model and original maker.

Many of those were manufactured in Europe and had all of their original markings scrubbed. The Turks did everything they could to keep those rifles in working order. Some of the alterations are ingenious and were done in the field. If the bore is good that rifle will shoot very well.

I see the cleaning rod is missing. Most are. IMHO that rifle should bring at least $350 but interest is low. To bad because once you start looking into the history of Turkey you will see what you've been missing.

I have four different models of Turk Mausers. All have great bores and all shoot well. I really LIKE them.

Very nice gun! I have 3 m38 pattern rifles like that one. I have a 1940, 41 and 42 rifle. The 1940 has the exact same repairs to the hand gaurd.

They all are good shooters and in fact I'd rate them way up there when it comes to accurate 8mm Mausers.

Any more pictures or info in regards to receiver markings would be appreciated if there are any. I've been studying these for several years and it's always great to find new examples to learn from.

I will add that although some Turk Mausers are well maintained and in good shape, some are far, far from it. I've seen multiple Turk made 98's with the primary locking lugs worn so badly they had significant wear on the third safety lug! Many Turk made 98's don't even seem to be case hardened, which is probably why they wore so badly. Doesn't seem to be a strength issue, just a durability issue. As bearhunter mentioned they used all sorts of Mauser actions and many of them are top quality like the German 1903's but even those often have seen very heavy use. They shot the daylights out of some of them.

$200 is a great deal, was just at a gun show in Winnipeg and they wanted $450 for a similar Mauser only with a bayonet

I was considering picking that perticular gun up. It was a 1893 model converted to the 1938 pattern. It was in decent shape and included the correct shortened 1890 bayo. Not a bad deal for $450.
