Who is planning on a spring hunt? What are you using for bait? My friend and I are using dog kibble, fish guts and heads, some deer feed (they liked it last deer season), molasses, and used friar grease. We will be in WMU 46.

If I can get it together in time I will be hunting at my camp in 62.......

Looking to make a spin barrel setup..... I typically use dog kibble and fryer oil..... sometimes I put a couple of beaver carcasses from trapping nearby to bring them in as well....

No baiting for me, going to head into 38, 39, and 42 for some spot and stalk if all goes well. Holidays start at the end of May, but hopefully the tag is full by then because the pike should be biting at camp. Can't wait to get out, it's been a long winter.

One of the guys we hunt with traps beaver. I think he has a few carcasses in the freezer. I'll ask him to get a few out.

Good luck. I agree, its been a long winter. Good luck on your stalk. I cant wait to get out.

I've not heard of aerosol bear bombs before. You learn something new every day.... :)

If you can't score those beaver carcasses (which work better), pm me your address and I will send one along (bear bomb that is)... I have a few left over from before I started trapping.....

Like Hoyt said, rotting fish, beaver etc serve as a great one time attractant..... but it's your bait that would keep them coming back so only use one when your bait is set up nearby......

With "thebaron's" help I blew a couple of beaver dams at camp, which stranded a whack of leeches on the muck...... have never seen so many predators come out afterwards..... shot two yotes on the banks..... and saw a few bears, but we didn't have a spring season at that time.....

Thanks Brad. We will use the fish as a scent attractant and keep up with the kibble ect... If we can't get the beaver I'll send you a PM.

I got the bait out last weekend - kibble, 3 gallons of jam, sardines and all my meat trimmings from the winter in a stink bucket hung in the trees. hoping to get them to come in but if nothing on the cams before my holidays ill be headed up north for a spot and stock. This will be my second season, any helpful tips would be appreciated.

Popcorn and molasses seem pretty popular in my area. im waiting to find out if I have permission for a property I know of before I go out and buy a tag.

Good luck to those that are going out. We are rigging up a large coffee can full of treats on a rope to get the bears to stand up, so we can make sure they are legal. Just a friendly reminder to the new hunters, you can only harvest males in the spring hunt. Sow's, and sow's with cubs are off limits.

Our main target. This guy seriously disrupted our deer hunt last November, and was playing hide and seek with me.

From the hunting regulation summary - page 76:
The ministry has expanded and extended the black bear spring season pilot for five years... The harvest of bear cubs and female bears accompanied by a cub is prohibited during the spring season. You must always be sure of the ### and age of an animal before deciding if it is legal to shoot.

Doesn't this mean females are legal, if they are not accompanied by a cub or am I reading this incorrectly?

I just reread that too. Looks like lone females are legal. I would not shoot one though. Any cubs could be away from her, if she is checking out the bait. It's not worth it in my books.
