Hate to rain on the love in, but something being unknown and unavailable to a large majority of the population kind of precludes that item from being quintessential. If I could own one, I definitely would, but the 17 is most definitely the quintessential Glock.

Totally late to the game, but a 17C or RTF2 frame would be options. I would +1 the choice of 34 as a same but different choice. Whatever is fun.....
 
Buy the advantage arms .22 for the G17 and shoot the sh!<#% out of it. I've got the gen 4 G22 with 9mm barrel and .22 kit. I am basically covered unless I develop a hankering for .357 Sig.

I personally have no use for a .22 pistol. I get that some people really enjoy it and all the power to them, but I'm not in that group. Truth be told, I'd much rather get a .357 SIG, than a .22, lol.
