What is your opinion of a "good shooter"

I started in the rimfire accuracy game about 3 years ago. I now always test out a new rifle with a good supply of high and mid end target ammo. My lowest grade ammunition is cci SV and Aguila SV. I usually only use it for sighting in or off hand open sight shooting. Next I always use a decent optic. For me my myopia seems to like the Vortex PST and hst in 6-24×50.
This is my starting point I also shoot from a sturdy benchrest set up to eliminate as many variables. I can usually tell real quick how my rifle performs. I am getting spoiled now and to me it has too shoot consistent under a half inch@50yds before I would keep it.I see lots of statements of how well their bulk ammunition works, maybe once in a blue moon but I've ammo the biggest factor .My advice is to invest in some decent match ammo and you will surprise yourself.

Was shooting at 100m with American Eagle 40 gr Lead RN today. I got approximately a 2MOA group. I was using a Savage MkII FV with Leupold VX-2 2-7x33, set on 7x. For regular high velocity plinking ammo, is this group decent, avg, or poor for what the MkII FV can do?

MOA accuracy is good results with a good shooter. It is important to note that decent ammunition is needed to have a fighting chance at achieving consistent good shooting.

A 'good shooter' applies as much to the 'shooter' as to the rifle they are holding...as for the rifle ,any rifle I can knock the head off a grouse is a good shooter....I generally carry old mossbergs and find 'quiet' 22ammunition is pretty accurate-if I hold the gun straight

I have 4 rimfires and my 11 year old son has one. Two Ruger 10/22's, different models. Two Remington 597 HB's (one is mine, the other my son's), and one Mossberg 151K. They are all good shooters. A buddy of mine can out shoot me using one on my Ruger's but I can outshoot him using my Rem. If he use's the Ruger and I use the Rem, it's pretty close accuracy wise.

The shooter, the optics, the ammo, they all play a part, as does the build of the rifle itself. However, I think one of the biggest factors is fit and comfort. It could be the best, most accurate rifle in the world, but if you aren't comfortable using it, it's not a "good shooter" to me.

I personally wouldnt even bother attempting to test shoot a target gun for precision tight groups with a low power 3-9x optic... maybe some can do it, but not me, I like to see the target. my .22's wear 18x and 24x magnification, and I'd like more, but that's all I could afford.

With or without with an el cheapo Bushnell 3-9 optic .
This is where the failures start , then there is the ring selection.
The Op is close, just has to spend a little more on optics and the tight groups will follow.

None of my rifles wear el cheapo scopes, but I have shot some well under moa groups with cheap optics. I purchased my Model 54MS-R used, and it came with a cheap Bushnell 6-18 scope, and I tested it before purchasing the HD-5 that currently resides on it. It did shoot under moa at 50 yards, but it does shoot much better with the much better quality scope. I have to wonder why someone would spend the cash for a 54MS-R, and then mount a cheap Bushnell on it.
My custom Cooper wears a 3-9x42 Kahles, and I can shoot under moa with it at 50 yards, but I have more magnification on my other rimfires.

Same here. My rifle of choice is an old mossberg and a tube full of CCI Quiets. It's like shooting an extremely hard hitting pellet gun. No ear protection required.

Savagecanuck speaks true! I bought an Anschutz Model 64 from him and it shoots like a dream. Match ammo, and a Bushnell 5-15X Elite and the holes are touching at 50 yards, and at 100 less than an inch is a good day for me.

Awesome report from peace frog! Glad to see that older match 64 is giving you some good results. It's a great shooter! Now you need to do the 50yd challenge with it.
