Hey.

I have been shooting a browning BLR in 308 for the past several years and the hornady sst's have been amazing for me. Well recently i have been gifted a Tikka T3X in 300 win mag. Wondering peoples thoughts on either the 200 grain hornady eld-x or Barnes TTSX in 180 grain. I also am thinking IMR for the powder.

I will mostly be shooting elk but also deer.

Thanks

I use Barnes 180's ttsx . Around 3000fps good for any game on this continent. I have used 200 partions with good results on game. Long range paper punching Berger 210's hvld, haven't shot any game with them. Nosler accubonds also work well.
With any 180's ive developed loads for, the best powder was IMR 4831 for both accuracy and velocity.

I have worked with 300 WMs for more than 30 years. I have attained the best velocity consistently with IMR 7828 and 180 and 200 gn bullets. 200 fps more than can be attained with 4831. Accuracy in all my rifles was good (1 1/4") to exceptional (.7" or less). I however have not tried any late comers like the RL powders or some of the new VV powders.
I have used the IMR 7828 loads from the high arctic to sub equatorial Africa without problems, even though I have heard that it is supposed to be very temp sensitive, my experience hasn't shown this to be significant in my hunting.
I think powders like RL 23 might be very good as well and it is supposed to be very temp stable, if one worries about such things. I also know guys that have great success with H1000 and heavier bullets in the 300 WM, I personally haven't tried it, so I have no opinion on it.
For bullets I hunt almost exclusively with Nosler Accubonds or Partitions in my 30 cals. I have tried TSX and TTSX and Swifts and always seem to come back to ABs or Parts........they shoot well, they kill well and they hold together well, this is what I want in a bullet. I like the Swift A-Frames but availability has always been sketchy in my parts of the world anyway, but I have always (pretty much) been able to acquire either Parts or ABs and they both have a higher BC than the A-Frames.

...in 300 win ...Barnes TTSX in 180 grain...

Hunting load for my 300 Win. Mag. is the 180gr TTSX at 3050 fps MV using Re19. It's a rather long bullet so if your rifle has a short magazine or short throat then deep seating will be required which will compromise case capacity.

No issues with my Sako 85 Grey Wolf because magazine and throat lengths are generous. Note that a 1:11 twist or faster is recommended to properly stabilize this bullet (my Sako has a 1:11 twist).

The Tikka will have a 1:11 twist barrel if it is stock. Check your bullet with a twist rate calculator, Berger has a good one.

An example is the 200 gr bullet and probably the 180gr TTSX will need more twist, 10.5T @2900 and 10.3T @2700 ft/s. With the 1:11 your 200gr bullet's BC will be compromised by 4%, this is due to increased 'wobble', doesn't mean it will keyhole or not shoot well, but needs to be taken into account when putting together a ballistic chart.

The Tikka in 300 WM, 11T, I have uses a 208gr A-Max and H-1000 to great effect on targets, on a very-very good day will hold <0.4 moa out to 1000 yards.

If it's a hunter, then as c-fbmi says, 200gr NAB's and NP's are the way to go

If I think I need my .300 WM, I think I also need a 200 grain Partition. H1000 works best for my rifle and that bullet, although I have stopped trying others (only 3 other serious tries) since I found that load.

Tagging this thread, just starting to load for my 700 CDL 300WM

Hoping it likes the 200AB, 208 AMAX or 210-215 Hybrid :)
