Poor shooter here. Can't afford a Chrony.

Have been reloading hunting rounds for 7.62x39 and would like to mimic the ballistics of surplus ammo. Specifically the Dominion brand (made in Ukraine).

Has anyone clocked the muzzle velocity of this ammo out of a Vz.58 with a nonrestricted-length barrel?

Thanks

Mike

if you don't have a chrony then how will you know how fast your reloads are going?

He's probably going by the FPS listed in a reloading manual. Which is only a ballpark estimate. So ya OP, you should save up and buy a chrony, they aren't that expensive that you couldn't afford one if you saved up for a bit. They are a valuable tool if you are into reloading.

If you really wanted to you could just "Mexican match" them.

Not from a VZ, but i have chrono data for a Mini-30. Both 7.62x39 gas piston guns with 18.5" barrels so it should be nearly identical.

Factory Ammo:
Federal AE 124gr FMJ - Avg Vel 2348fps @ 56degF
Winchester 123gr SP - Avg Vel 2349fps @ 64degF

I have had great luck using Hornady brass with a 123gr Hornady SP and CCI 400 (Small Rifle) and 26.7gr of H4198 yielding an avg velocity of 2349fps @65deg F.

I imagine you'll have to reduce your load just a bit if you're using large primed brass, I haven't tried yet.

My Czech BXN 1970s clocked just over 2400 (2430 if I remember correctly)
This was on a 20degree day at 15ft from muzzle. Your mileage may vary.

My 26.5gr H4198 loads with 123gr SSTs run just under 2400 (2378 in my recollection.

Close enough INMHO

My NR 858 was in the low 2400's with Czech ball. S&B SP's ran 2370 average. Russian brass cased '50 production is all over the map. Lows in the 2200's and a few over 2500. I save that stuff for my SKS. That was shot in 22C, 15ft from the muzzle.
