I just picked up this ishapore rifle and the bore is perfect. The problem is there is a hole in the reciever. Is it safe to shoot or a Wall hanger?

If you're talking about the hole on the left side where the barrel meets the receiver, then yes that is supposed to be there. It's there in case of a case head rupture to release the gas pressure. If that's the hole you're talking about, the rifle is safe to shoot, just get your gunsmith to check the head space and give it a good overall check before you shoot it.

in the pic you can see the hole just behind the screw in the reciever right under the charger. i know about all the other holes that are supposed to be there.

Looks like a casting defect from when the receiver was made. I would get it checked out but it has lasted this long. Only concern would be if there is a cracks that extends from it. Could be checked with an LPI test.

You don't need to LPI that, in my opinion. If you do, the hole will bloom out with dye, whether cracked or not. That's an inclusion from when the original billet was forged. These receivers were not cast, they were forged at high temperature in a giant press from a solid steel billet, then machined.

That part of the receiver is fairly close to the left locking recess, so I'd probe it with a needle to make sure it's shallow, but the locking lug bears aft of the inclusion, and it's been in use all these years with no ill effect. Bear in mind the Enfield locks up in two areas, but the primary lug is on the bolt handle side of the receiver.

If you are worried about it, tie it to a tire and use a string to pull the trigger on a +10% reload. It should survive it no problem.

Looks like there's a bit of pitting from the pictures. If it is an Ishapore, I could be rust. Most Ishapore were used and stored in warm humid places.

There is some pitting but its minor. the bore on this rifle is pristine and has great rifling. I'm not to worried about the hole in it. Did i mention the rifle is all matching? every number matches. I will have it ndt'd at work next week to see if there are cracks but im heading to the range tomorrow and i have some 80's fn manufactured ammo i want to run through it. I think i will tie it to something and try it out before i put my face against it.

In my opinion, I wouldn't worry about it. That hole is waaaay smaller than the screw hole ahead of it. The No. 1 receivers are drilled and tapped with 2 sometimes 3 holes on that portion of the receiver for scope mounts, and no one worries if the receiver's integrity has been compromised.

It looks to me like a very slight imperfection in the forging with an almost zero percent impact on the strength of the unit.

Just a flaw in the railroad rail, it was made out of. :)
