Tangent or Peep?

So as I wait for my .22 mag CZ 455 FS to come up from Lipsey's I started having a little "anti optic" debate in my head so not to spoil the classic lines on the rifle. Over 50 yr old eyes, just started with some mild glasses for distance, so would a Skinner peep or the CZ tangent sights have an advantage over each other?

Or just say "screw it" and put a little Leupold on it and quit trying to fool ones self.... Gonna be a going for a walk grouse and rabbit rifle.

Theoretically, the peep would be more accurate than the open sights, but personally I prefer the open sights, even though the front beads are getting a little fuzzy with age. It really comes down to personal preference and experience.

Get an entry level rear apeture sightfrom a vintage walther rifle. Tradex has them in stock. Then a globe front with inserts. Incredible accuracy and out to 100m will show well against a 10x scoped rifle providing your eyesight is up to par.

If considering diopter sights, the challenge faced by many is finding or adapting a globe front sight. There is the "ghost ring" sold by J&P Custom Products; it comes in several sizes.

My eyes are getting old, too, so I would be thinking about a small scope like a 2-7 or 3-9 for hunting and plinking. Smaller scopes won't detract from the graceful lines of the FS rifle.

With a .22mag, you're no doubt shooting game. To realize the accuracy potential inherent in that FS, it would be an injustice to the game with open sights. My 452 FS .22lr wears a Weaver v24. Looks great to me, don't particular care what others think, it works. For a smaller scope, a 2-7or 3-9 would look cute. Lots of opinions, they're all free. Cruise the Rimfire Central CZ forum, lots of pics. I'm north of 65, gophers are small for old eyes.

For the OP's purpose of grouse and rabbits, the cuteness factor would not be important or relevant with a 2-7 or a 3-9. Seeing the bird or the bunny would be more important than having the ability to zoom in on it like a gopher at 100 yards.

I've run a Leupold 2-7 Rimfire scope as well as a Williams peep on my FS rifles. I really like the 2-7, 2X is a huge FOV and takes away any eye/low light problems. If you use a set of Warne QD rings, you can go to the tangent sight quickly if you want to try something different at the range and the return to zero is excellent.

If you want to set it up and try it before you decide on scope vs irons I'd say using a larger opening peep or even a rear ghost ring style rear sight would be a good start. Too small a rear aperture will cut down your light and that has it's own issue of reducing contrast. A larger size aperture like 3/32 to 1/8 will not cut out the light by too much but will still be small enough to sharpen your vision a little.

The front sight would be the real issue. So many of them all but disappear in dim lighting when black. Some neon green or yellow might be a good choice for painting the front sight bead.

If you find that this is still too dim to see your intended game well then at least you tried and can move on to some sort of optic.
