In Canada it is a restricted firearm. RPAL and registration required.
Register it before you bring it; then when it reaches the border, it is already in the system.

A replica is a thing that looks like a gun, but isn't. A replica of a modern firearm is a prohibited device. A replica of an antique is not.

Although it is a copy of an antique firearm, in Canada it is (unfortunately) considered a modern restricted firearm.

The law in the US is, arguably, far more enlightened than ours. The cap and ball revolver, although made in a modern factory, was an obsolete design more than 125 years ago.

It is what it is.

Doesn't that count as an antique since it was manufactured before 1898 and doesn't discharge rim-fire or centre-fire ammunition?

well i have my rpal so thats no problem , i wish it was an original , ... in order to register the barrel length must be verified , and signed off , so cant do anything until customs have it in their lock up ( just went through this with my other pistols) ... should have brought it with me when i had the others shipped , was going to sell it , but would like to shoot it now .... or sell it ....
cheers for the answers

Colt's spec for the revolver will give your the barrel length.

In my one-off experience the words of the manufacturer are not enough. The PTB need to verify the length of the barrel by physical examination, just in case them pesky manufacturers are lying...

exactly this , .. my g17 glock and sigp226 dan wesson with 6 inch barrell all had to be hands on verified before i could register them

My father in law has an original Remington 1858 .44 in nearly this kind of shape. Makes me want to buy a reproduction model and get into BP. Does this habit never end?

My solution to this conundrum was to buy a Uberti reproduction of a 1858 Remington Conversion chambered in 45 Colt. If I really wanted the smoke and fouling I could buy or load BP cartridges. However, am having fun with smokeless and easy clean-up.
