The province closed the snapping turtle hunt from here on out.

Not cool
I would love to see there science and how thy came up with the reason for the closers. We have so many snappers in southern Ontario farm country

They have been listed as at risk for 8 years +.
Takes a while for them to get to maturity to reproduce
High mortality of adults in spring (road kills)
Poaching

There were a couple other reasons listed on the Ministry press release

No more turtle burgers... :(
These are still allowed...so far.

The reasoning I was told , was that very low numbers being taken made it easy to appease the likes of Suzuki, and other mouthpieces.
The NR Minister is a former nurse who knows less about hunting and forestry than a 5yr old and is purely politically driven in her decisions. Basically when Wynne gave her the portfolio, I've been told , the direction was " don't embarrass us and do as the party says. The public input was mainly based on bulk form letters from Lib supporters and Suzuki and other orgs.

I'm on the side of conservation on this one. Turtles are generally slow growing and slow breeding. They are not like carp, geese or deer. There is a particular wetland near Ottawa that is getting development pressure; trouble is, that patch is core to softshell (?) turtle habitat. Once it's gone, the turtles can't survive elsewhere.

Compared to 20 and 30 years ago, the numbers are way down.
Yeah, there are still pockets where they are doing ok, but those pockets are fewer and further between.
Ponds and swamps I used to hunt/fish around, you would see dozens out basking in the sun on rocks and logs. Now, maybe 1 or 2.

Yep. I've never tried it, but you're supposed to keep them alive in fresh water for a week before eating to flush to swamp out of them... then they are a delicacy, out of the swamp probably not so much lol.

Similar to a catfish. If you want the best tasting, keep it alive in clean water for a week or so so that all the crap can filter out.
Huge difference in taste.

Never understood this "hunt"..... Never have woken up with a burning desire to hunt the slowest animal on earth.....

How do you "hunt" something, yet keep it alive for a week anyways?
