Hey fellas, I'm seriously liking my Whelen these days too, but it still hasn't lost any weight and weighs a tonne... Ruger..

wondering whats the general thoughts on getting a cheap 3006 T3 an spending $600 or so on a rebarrel job, should be able to find the bloke who will do it mates rates hopefully, might just have to buy a barrel!

whats the general concensus here regarding doing that?

ideally want to keep the 35 whelen chambering.

would a Rem 700 be lighter than the Ruger to find an already chambered model?

Thanks dudes
WL

Other option is go even Cheaper, unless I can find a flogged 3006 T3, a Marlin might be ok? about $550aud. V 800-900 aud T3.

but the tikka is proberly a decent platform? no? Them a Remington 700 is certainly on the menu!?

keen to hear options though.. I really don't want to spend much but want to keep a 35 whelen in the safe, for hunting

I had a 25-06 Marlin X7 that was rebarreled to a 22" 1:12 twist 35 Whelen. It was accurate and weighed 6lbs 10oz with the factory walnut stock.

I can't remember the dimensions, but the internal magazine ended up being a bit short to load 250gr+ Rounds in it, I also grew to dislike the blind mag.

I went cheap . I have a Stevens 200 rebarreled to 358 Win ( originally 7mm/08 ) , put together by the venerable Rembo . Not quite a 35 Whelen , but close enough for me . I'm in the process of putting it together . It's a happy medium for me . It throws heavy bullets , doesn't weigh much , but isn't too abusive in the recoil department . Some don't like Savage bolt guns , but I've always had good results with them .

I own a Ruger M77 338 Win. Mag. which is likely very similar in weight to your 35 Whelen and used to own a Remington 700 CDL 35 Whelen. In comparison the 700 is a nicely balanced rifle in spite of the 24" barrel and is surprisingly lightweight.

But I sold it because I prefer my custom mauser action Zastava 350 Rem. Mag. a lot more.

Maybe it's just me but I wouldn't choose a Tikka, a Marlin or a Remington over a Ruger for a .35 Whelen build, ESPECIALLY if I had one already. The extra few ounces of the Ruger just makes the Whelen more enjoyable to shoot. That being said, I've done some irrational decisions myself when it comes to rifles.

Why not buy a .338 WM t3 and load it to comfortable shooting specs?

Mine seems to like the heavier bullets and recoil is acceptable from a standing position. Loves the woodleigh 300 grain roundnoses when I do my part.

Weighs around 6.5 lbs with aftermarket irons. With the weight of the scope, a limbsaver and some mild loads you should be golden.

This board has both ruger and tikka fanatics, some will tell you one is the best rifle ever made, I say go with whichever one you like more. No factory rifle in the price range is lighter than a t3 lite in magnum chamberings though.

I'm a Whelen Lad, mate!! ;) love my whelen, got all the loading gear, some years usage already etc.. I want a whelen in the safe.

I agree with ya mate, the Ruger weight with reasonable Pad on the end makes a good point and shoot stable rifle! tis a bit heavy to lug , I would like to do bigger hunts with it BUT in saying that... maybe it is what it is. a half a day hunter

Copy mate that's a good answer, A friend just asked if I wanted a Rem 700 stainless 270... in a Boyds stock though.. Thing is apparently Heavy as it would be with Boyds... however, are you thinking what I'm thinking ??? Donour, sell stock, buy plastic Standard SPS, re barrel... and GO...
he stuffed up an mentioned he only paid $350 for it..... they retail around $1100.. second hand goes for 800-900... he is asking $700 to others.. I said for the first amount ill be interested.. in the end wants $450... il try for 400 and he will have a deal I think!
ps- I need another Rem 700 anyway--- 270 or the 35 Whelen be awesome

I have a similar T3 in 338 as well as a Brno ZKK600 in 9.3x62, the BRNO is similar weight to a Ruger 77 and if I am walking any distance the Tikka is coming with Me it is a pleasure to carry, the BRNO is for calling the Moose to me, Limbsaver on the Tikka is more like a necessity than an option.

I would definitely keep the Ruger. I've been wanting one for years but other things keep popping up. A stainless Hawkeye in .35 Whelen is a dream of mine.

A light weight stock like Slamfire suggested might be a good option. I haven't looked into specs to see how much that would save tho.

Your 35 Whelen M77 is an excellent rifle. You are cautioned not to part with it because you will likely regret it.

Consider getting a lightweight stock. An example -

I'd rekon I would almost still keep the Ruger, back of the Safe stuff.

HECK I'm proberly just better off getting the Marlin X7 in 30-06 and just bloody usin that hey! 180grainer factory ..scrub with chance of 200m-250m shots. then if I still get keen as on the Whelen, the marlin barrels look like they be Rebarreled no worries
