I have 2 LH 700's in the Whelen, one a custom and the other wearing a factory takeoff from a RH rifle. My factory Whelen wears a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40. I'll try to weigh it sometime today and report back. Seems to me it is around the 8 lb mark but seems to carry much lighter than other 8 pounders that I own.

I too wanted a Whelen and I went the way of a Savage. Picked up a used Trophy Hunter in 30-06. Ordered a Pre-Threaded Shilen from Mystic Precision and did the barrel swap. I put on a 22inch, 1-14 twist, heavy sporter stainless. I was going to bed the action but after my first set of handloads was shooting single holes, I left the tupperware stock in place and not bedded. I put on a 3-9 Minox Scope and the whole package comes in at 8lbs 2 oz. Not bad with that barrel. I took my elk with it 2 years ago with Barnes 225gr TSX handloads.... I love my Whelen. Next thing for me is to load up some cast bullets and pistol bullets for the gopher patch
Probably not too bad, there was a Youtube vid where a guy had one rebarrelled in .416 Ruger. Wild West Guns out of Alaska apparently did the job. Now, that would be a whole lotta serious whoop-a$$ !!
Your 35 Whelen M77 is an excellent rifle. You are cautioned not to part with it because you will likely regret it.
Consider getting a lightweight stock. An example -

this is not an option for ruger action ...
yeah ruger doesn't have many after market options, an the weight itself is in the metal work, bulky action and stuff

I been reading it cant be done? is that bs or requires a specialist gunsmith? or now I think about it, justa Reamer job from a existing 358 win?

Or just leave it as a 358 Win. Still in production. I have a takedown model and load it at 2100 fps MV with the 310gr Woodleigh RN SN bullet (1:12 twist so can stabilize these). It will also fire 250gr bullets at 2300 fps MV. Lightweight, totes and stows nicely. And it's quite capable of downing big critters.
Only problem is that the 358 Win. won't kill game as dead as a 35/284 will.
I load my Whelen with 250s at around 2400fps, so with a 358 I wouldn't miss much in that department, ive shot a 35 Whelen at 300m a few times and noted the Drop, it was quite workable on Big deer and Big game like that! ^ a 358 might just limit it to 275 precisely lol, or say 250m .
wouldn't be primarily for longer shots anyway, I'm thinking of it thogh for sure, not sure in a take down but is kinda cool, and handy.

options are 338 federal aswell , in a T3 which is a good work horse and light.. fairly keen on that idea- potentially re barrel it ddown the track.
how light is that BLR mate? could be a go-er

Thanks! No issues currently - Cabela's has Nosler 350 Rem. Mag. brass. I've got a good supply from them to last quite a while.
My 350 Rem. Mag. was built on a Zastava long mauser action to seat bullets out further to take full advantage of available case capacity and a 24" (1:12 twist) barrel for higher muzzle speeds to kill heavy game extra dead.
