Hi there,

I currently own a 30-06 Browning X-Bolt topped with a 4-12 Nikon Monarch and a 6.5x55 Mauser 96 topped with a 4x Fixed scope. While the 6.5x55 is alright and shoots 1.5moa, I always seem to reach out for the 30-06 since I often hike out in bear country and because it's more accurate.

I live in an area where I could draw a Grizzly/Bison tag. I am however more of a deer person and longish shots are common here. (200-400yards)

I've been toying with the idea of getting a second browning X-Bolt as a second rifle. I'm just not sure what caliber would complement the 30-06 well.

Do you want to go up or down in caliber? The 30-06 will do it all, so now your just buying a third gun cause your a nut...

Going up? Get a 375 H&H they are a lot of fun too shoot. Good on deer & anything bigger...
Going down? Get a 223 or 243 for varmints ...

This, if you are going to start going after larger meat.

???
How is this for "larger meat" vs the 06'.

OP,

Your 06' is a very versatile chambering.
If you're looking for something heavier to reach out farther, I'd say a 338WM. If the intent is something lighter to reach out, I'd say 257 Weatherby mag.

If you just want a backup/compliment rifle with similar energy, but a flatter trajectory....... then yup 7mm RM.

300 Win mag with the heaviest, premium, high BC hunting bullet you can use with the twist rate of the rifle you choose. Common is a 1:10 twist so likely about a 200 grain pill that will give more foot pounds that an '06. I have 200 grain ELD-X to try out first in my 300 WM.

I thought he wanted to know about a person's complement of 30-06 rifles, of which I have 3. But if he wants to know the perfect compliment to his 30-06, then, yes...9.3x62.

You guys just miss it .........

The 9.3x62 would be perfect with the 6.5x55 for the Euro combo.
The 30-06 needs a 35Whelen for the New World combo.

Either the Whelen or 9.3X62 are good choices... OR if you wanna sit with the kool kidz, get a .350 Rem Mag.
