Prices on used 870 police guns??

I've seen a few polices for $700 ish but I've yet to see any old security polices around. I remember when they were roughly $600.00 I love the 870 Police. My favorite pump.

I buy every decently price Wingmaster I see, but without agency guns getting sold on to our market, I haven't seen any Police models at a reasonable price. Note: my "reasonable" is probably higher than yours - I live in retail land now. I still think that a used Wingmaster is one of the best value propositions (quality for price) you'll ever find in the firearms market - but the price of new 14 and 18.5 inch tubes is going to make me poor.

Aside from a doing retro tactical build, is there really any advantage to starting off with a Wingmaster or Police?

The quality of the machining and finishing on the older guns is superb, the actions are smooth, the triggers are crisp, you don't have to pound out the little dimples in the mag tube (there aren't any) and the metal takes a refinish very well. Those are the pros. The cons are that most are chambered for 2 3/4 only, and most don't have the flexi-tab modification - if you're looking at a $250-300 gun - you can fix both, if you really want to. Oh yes, and the barrel lengths can be quite amusing.

I'm well aware that they're much nicer out-of-the-box, but if you're going to be polishing, tuning and Cerekoting anyway, as with the typical custom offering, then is it worth paying a major premium for them?

Exactly what I was thinking. Look at what Tac-Ord put out starting with an Express.

Starting with an old WM or Police isn't going to make the outcome any better with the work they put into them.

I agree. If you are going a full rebuild like tac ord or we do at s&J. That an express if fine.
But an older express police or wing master is better.

I'm also seeing old wingmaster going for $300 $400

I'm lazy, and the guys at Remington are (or were) better at that stuff than me, so as long as I can get a decent Wingmaster for $300 or less, I'm buying. Versus an Express at $450-500. The last one I picked up presents a bit of a dilemma - it's like new (zero finish wear on any part of the gun), now I'm looking at getting a proper blued barrel for it and some wood that doesn't look like it came off a '74 Eldorado.
