I've seen a lot of pictures where the Belgians around the end of the 1800's were putting grips on revolvers meant to mimic the S&W brand. The 8mm French Ordnance revolver bullet should be 0.323", so that might be what you have, as the Belgians copied it a lot. However, they then tended (always?) to stamp '8mm' somewhere near the front of the frame. Unfortunately, a lot of the 8mm were manufactured after 1897.
