Gentlemen, several months ago I bought an original Winchester Model 1892 made in 1913, chambered in 44 W.C.F. (44-40) to use as a shooter and a hunter. My 62 year-old eyes need a tang sight, so I managed to find an original Lyman tang sight and it arrived today. I opened the box, installed it on my '92, and headed off to the range forwith to test two different loads.

Photo of my Winchester 1892 44-40 shipped in 1913: (Note: cable lock removed for photo so don't be thinking it hangs like this all the time!)

First Load:
20 grains of 5744 under a 200 grain cast bullet (Accurate Moulds, gas check) sized to .429"
Velocity: 1,329 fps

Second Load:
18 grains of 5744 under a 200 grain cast bullet (Accurate Moulds, gas check) sized to .431
Velocity: 1,296 fps
A .431" diameter cast bullet is a snug fit for the final 1/8" of chambering.

Results:
Load #1: five-shot group at 100 yards = 1 7/8"
Load #2: five-shot group at 100 yards = 1 3/4"

Glad you like the way this old-timer shoots, men. I was thinking I might upgrade this '92 at some point in the future to maybe one in a little higher condition, but I don't think I want to do that anymore. When an old rifle shoots like this with cast bullets, it's a keeper!

I don't know man! You always find and or have some of the best levers a person would love to have! You have a keen eye for the levers!

UPGRADE????? Why would you consider that???? Nothing wrong with the rifle or the groups.
Many would consider it a keeper and many, many others would just love to have one like that.
A beauty!!!!

Thats a nice old rifle. It looks to be in excellent shape. I don't know much about lever rifle's but had a chance to shoot an old 1894 38-55 yesterday. They sure are fun to shoot. Great shooting btw.

Nice work............Kirk.
There is a good chance this old rifle will be around long after I've departed for Glory. Hope one of my kids enjoys it as much as I am.

Nice Win 38-55, I have pretty much the same gun, but made in 1920 in 32-20. It was my Grand Father's and came west from Ontario with my Father in 1962, so always been part of my family. Mine is a great shooter and although the bluing is a bit faded the bore and wood are in excellent shape. I shoot it quite often and it will be passed down to my children, and hopes are it will be with the family for many years to come. I need to learn how to post pictures to share a few of my old levers, I am a lever nut kinda guy.
