thanks for all your comments guys. Ill probably get a light barrel and be happy with it
You really have to take accuracy reports with a grain of salt.
It's so common to see guys like a certain rifle because it shoots to their standards with their predetermined choice of ammo. This is a key distinction...
Do you buy a rifle to suit your ammo or buy (or hand load) ammo to suit your rifle?
Case in point... I have a Bushmaster ACR DMR that started out shooting 4.5 inch groups at 100 yards.. I was not a happy camper. That was with 69 grain SMKs which should have shot faily well In that rifle... (1:7 barrel twist rate)
Well I fiddled with it and got it to shoot 2 inch groups with 69 grain SMKs....
Then the 77 grain bullets I ordered finally arrived and now its shooting under 0.75 inches at 100 yards. No big surprize here because 1:7 twist barrels are suitable for heavy bullets.
Now you have to ask yourself when someone provides accuracy feedback ... how much effort went into optimizing the match between rifle and ammo before drawing a conclusion.
Sorry, this might not help answer your question, but hopefully it provides some insights to help you read between the lines and assess the credibility of accuracy reports.
Im still pondering if i should take the plunge and get an xcr in 762x39 for my plinking fun run n gun varminter work horse range toy. i was in Edmonton and had a lot of time to kill, so i decided to go to every gun store they had to find a xcr-l in light barrel and heavy barrel to compare. But every store only had heavy barrels!? i asked why and they all said that they only special order the light barrels because they have too much barrel whip and ruin the xcr accuracy???
Does anyone have any experience with this? anyone test it? how much moa difference is there? i didnt find the front weight of the keymod with heavy barrel too bad. definitely better balanced than a sks. So which is the better barrel to get? accuracy is important to me, but i do walk around with my guns a lot too. What would you do?
thanks
Thanks a lot driller212, very informative. I'll get the light barrel and not look back.
One thing I'd like to ask about is when you said the XCR "newer line." Which ones are those? Are they the keymod ones, a certain year of production or serial number?
'll also ask here if any of the xcr's come with the Omni brass deflector, fast2 stock and type 2 parts? Or do you have to buy those "upgraded" parts?
Thanks for your help guys, I appreciate it
Was shooting my pencil barrel today in the hot sun. Wanted to make some slight adjustments to my zero bcuz i knew it was off. First group 5 shots was decent 3inches @ 100 yards on a plastic table. started doing some quick firing on steel, went back to paper and my groups were so large they wernt even groups anymore. The barrel and handguard were scortching hot but I dunno if it can affect accuracy that badly. Actually considering the scope might not be retaining zero, will need to check next time I get out there.
Has anyone experimented with re-torquing the barrel retention bolt when the rifle is hot?
What would this achieve? Never thought about doing that. I figured once its torqued down to 250 inch pounds you leave it there until the rare occasion where u need to take the barrel out.
Metal expands when it heats up which could potentially change the tension of the retention bolt, it you re-torque it when hot it would be at 250 in-lb when you're using it. Not sure it would make a lot of difference but it may be worth experimenting with to see if the consistency improves as it warms up.
