Can someone explain to me the thinking behind wanting to do 2gun matches rather than 3gun? I'm seeing 2gun matches in a few places but haven't seen anyone give their reasons for it.

didn't know that MDs were required to give reasons to you for 2 gun matches.

Because they hate shotguns.
That's me! I'm going into my first 3G this July at Lone Butte. Gonna be an eye opener! A heavy pump with a dump pouch. Might take a day to finish a stage!

Space constraints, club Executive constraints, time constraints, lack of proper targetry? Probably the first one in most cases, IMO?

What he said^^. We just ran 2 2G matches at our club. They were very successful and sold out quickly. I think it's a niche that most shooters are comfortable with. Adding a shotgun increases the cost and load out tremendously as well as increases the set up time for the MD.

3guns matches are basically "shotgun matches". Remove the shotgun, 2guns matches and we usually see different winners.

Both are fun, the more matches the better !!

Interesting notion, not sure I agree with it, but it would be interesting to find out. The top guys here are good with all three so I can't see it making a lot of difference.

It's been said that you can't win a 3 gun match with your shotgun, but you can certainly lose the match with it.

What about two gun matches where it's pistol/shotgun...???

What then?

Increased cost to shoot three gun. Mostly due to the fact I don't own a shotgun, I can't easily reload for it so it's too expensive to feed Along with 223 and 9mm.

I'm content with uspsa/ipsc only and rifles only, but rifle + pistol is easily doable.

In my experience, pistol is where you can really make it count. I absolutely suck with an AR but pistol I've worked on thru winter. Which is probably why I came in 6th on Sundays 2gun.

It doesn't really take a lot of live rounds in practice to shoot a shotgun well for 3 gun though...and everyone shoots cheap birdshot at like 30 cents/round.

I agree with you there, shotguns are pretty easy to aim at stationary targets (I suck at trap lol) . But buying another gun for 1000$ then accessories (extensions, RDS etc) and shell holders (none of my current gear can accommodate them, so new gear etc).

Easily another 2k+.

I can just imagine the pissing and moaning at a match like that.

Well hopefully anyone that would piss and moan would just stay home.
I've hosted such a match and really... The rational for it was it allowed us to set up the match with less work. Steel didn't need to be shrouded for shotgun and all the pistol targets were cardboard. Pretty simple for newbies to shoot (you'd think)... All steel/clays are for shotgun. All cardboard for pistol.
As anyone who's put on matches knows... Good help can be hard to find so any short cuts that make set up/running and tear down easier are welcome.

I've got no issues with any matches regardless of what number or combination of guns are used.

I agree...
One thing about shotgun is the loading time when the shooter comes to the line. Make ready your pistol/rifle? Slap in a mag. Make ready your shotgun? Thumb, thumb, thumb, thumb, thumb, thumb... try to work in a ghost load, screw it up, jiggle it around...those that can quad load can load up quickly, but then they still want to replace the shells on their carrier.
One way to overcome this is a shot gun preload station, but then you need a dedicated ARO to stand guard over the guns.

...And then the same thing can happen at the end of the stage. To show a shotgun clear can mean racking shells all over the ground to be picked up.

Lots of fun shooting between those two points though!
