I'm looking to rechamber a Win 94 to 30-30AI. Does anyone know of a gunsmith who has this in their wheelhouse and can turn around in a reasonable amount of time?

I just figured out what 'recco' is but I was not aware gunsmiths had a wheelhouse.

What's a wheelhouse?

The bridge. Perhaps only navy gunsmiths need apply. Should check the engine room for tooling though...

If time is a factor maybe acquiring your own reamer would speed things up. Otherwise find a smith who has one already.

Make sure you establish which version of the chamber that you want, dies the same.

Iirc the 2 main ones are the 40* and the later 28* shoulder angles.

Mine was done by KS Arms in edmonton... Around 25 years ago...

I have had two 30-30 AI in the past, one a Marlin 336, and the other a Model 94. Both were rechambered by Paul Rogan, the publisher of Access to Firearms. David Henry got that reamer from Paul, and most likely still has it.

It was no trick at all to get 150s to 2700 fps in the 94. Oddly the Marlin lever got a bit sticky before that. That surprised me, so I checked the throats by seating a bullet backwards in each rifle, and discovered that the 94 had a much longer throat.

I guess Winchester was using freebore long before Roy Weatherby got on that bandwagon. ;)
