New M305s vs $399 era M305s... and shorties vs full length

I sold my $399 era M305 to my dad years ago along with all my Portuguese surplus 7.62 :bangHead: and have recently been toying with the idea of owning another. The pics that I'm seeing of these new rifles priced in the $600 range give me the impression that the new manufacture rifles available now have better machining/fit and finish than the $399 era guns. Would those of you who own/have owned both agree? How do the rifles compare overall? Any issues that are specific to the new ones? How do the new rifles headspace compared to the old ones, and do they often still have barrels that are out of index? I remember it being somewhat common for the old rifles to have soft rear sights prone the stripping? I've been out of the M14 loop for ages.

I tend to see more shortie M305s than full length these days. Are there any trade offs going to the shortened barrel? Recoil, muzzle flash, volume? Any one here care to share why they prefer the shortened barrel over the original, or vice versa? I tend to be somewhat of a traditionalist when it comes to original firearm designs, and the M14 looks a bit odd as a shortie to me, but maybe I'd have to handle one to fully appreciate it.

Thanks!

I bought mine last fall and barrel indexing was still an issue. 4 out of the 5 I looked at all had improper indexing. The rear sights are all garbage too. From what I've seen/heard the shorties tend to have more quality control issues than the standard length ones. I'd recommend inspecting a rifle in person as opposed to buying online.

the most common issue that I have observed over the years is the indexing issue which leads to messed up front sight and defective rear sight. SF M1A receiver is garbage too. I am no longer investing in this platform.

That's a bit of a bummer, but not surprising. Great guns for those who love to tinker and who are DIY inclined. I'm neither when it comes to guns. A bit of a relief really, as there are still a bunch of other guns I'd like to grab. Anytime I can scratch one off the list for good reason, I'm happy to do so. Lol. Thanks guys.

i recently acquired a 18.5 norc, and so far i'm completely happy with it. i can only compare it to my old sa socomII. the 305 is not as loud, and is a little bit longer, but both shoot very well. the sa may have a little better fit and finish, but you would have to determine if the extra expenditure is worth it. all in all, i don't think i would drop the dough again on a sa, however if budget was a non-issue, i'd buy one again.
i find the 18.5 to be a good trade off from the 16 sa. i would never want a 22 inch i'll tell you that lol.

I owned a full-length Norc 305. I now own a Springfield SOCOM16 and really like the compact size. The muzzle brake and irons work great.
Although I could have bought 3-4 Norcs I prefer to have one SOCOM16.....

My Springfield Armory SOCOM16 (for comparison)........

Can't begin to tell you how much I'm over these Chinese "M14's".

If I were going for a shortie I'd spend the extra on a SOCOM16. Years ago every rtime I shot my friends SOCOM I regretted investing so much in the Norinco. About the same money in the end .... lesson learned.

What's the breakdown side x side comparison of cost?

Cheers

Hey Jay, the big problem isn't so much cost, although the springfield is expensive, its the fact that the springfield socom looks so great, BUT..................ITS FRICKEN RESTRICTED!!!!!!!!!

Oh, I agree HH!

But at $649.99 for a 18.5 Shortie or Socom, I could not imagine 'springing' for the SOCOM 16 with it being restricted...

Cheers
Jay

Jay...I felt the same way re the restricted status of my SOCOM16 before purchasing. But I was getting tired(bored actually) shooting my AR's. Matter of fact ALL my firearms are Range toys (even my non's).
The SOCOM16 happens to be my funnest:)
