due to shoulder injuries i can no longer shoot heavy recoiling rifles. i have a ruger #1 in 458 win mag i never shot and would like to try it. anybody have any ideas for loads. looking for around 1500 to 1600 fps with light bullets. was thinking of using the lee 340 gr bullet with say 23 grs. of unique. opinions or ideas would be appreciated.

Might not help much, but I use 25 grains of 4759 and a couple different 500ish grain cast bullets. Drops the kick down to approximately .300 mag levels, which relatively speaking is a powderpuff load. 20 grains was even less, and the accuracy went out the window at 30 grains.

TrailBoss loads will help you get in the ballpark. It's big and fluffy enough to fill the 458 case better than Unique will. (Are there any Unique loads for the 458? I don't know)

i have an article that mentions a load using 350 gr cast bullet and 23grs unique. no velocity but meant for 50 yds only. supposed to be pussycat load.

Most of my loading in this bullet diameter 'nitch' has been for the 45-70. I have access to a few cast bullets and I'll have to try them in the 458WM as well. Quite likely I'll go with Trail boss. Seems to be a reasonable choice for some light load testing in the 458WM.

Why tag the thread as "please remove"? Posting a thread in the forums isn't like the EE. It stays up for general interest. I'm seeing a lot of this lately.
