Hi to all,
I've been in the tactical world and everything now I'm looking for something more classical.

I would like to buy a hunting rifle for moose and bear hunting I'd like something compact with short barrel and caliber that allow good punch down range with good balisitic I was thinking something like a .300mag.

Here are my criteria:
Compact: 22-24'' (preferably 22'')
Beautiful wood
Pistol Grip similar to mcmillan stocks
Detacheable mag
Caliber .300 (someting with enough punch for long shots

I'm looking for a higher grade than the axis and 700s of this world.
My friend just bought a blaser R8 which is a beauty and include all the features I'm looking for but I don't have 5k for a rifle.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Impossible to answer without an idea of your budget. I've come to realize that most rifles out there aren't 100% to my liking. All have pros and cons and what those are will depend entirely on you. Look into having something built to your taste. That's what I'm doing right now. Find an action you like, then find a barrel you like, then a stock, send everything to the smith, get what you want and spend what you want on what matters to you.

To be in that price range, with the features you're looking for and the minimum class of rifle you're willing to accept, then it's likely going to be a Sako 85.

Lots of beauty/quality rifles out there around that price bracket: M70 SG, Nosler 48, Kimber. But they don't have detach mags or 22" barrels.

There are some high grade Browning X-bolts, maybe?

Thanks for the suggestions I'll look at those models.
Indeed I didn't think of the X-bolts one caught my eyes.
I did find one that meet most of my criteria so far which would be the CZ ultimate hunter only offered in .300win mag.

A really nice option if you can stretch the budget just a bit would be the Mauser M-12. But yeah that CZ looks good.

The Verney's are a nice $2k rig, probably some decent Sig's or CZ's around there as well.
Verney in 300mag at Tradex, nice test target.

Buy a Tikka M65 Deluxe,

I owned a sako 85 greywolf sold it and have not looked back, dollar for dollar the old tikkas
Win hands down,

They have a cool story and were origonally on par with Sako before they bought them

Awsome wood furnature,
good palm swell, and cheek support
silky action,
crisp adjustable trigger(mine is set at 2 lbs, I cant tell a difference between
That and my timney)
They are really accurate my factory barrel shoots as good as any
detachable mag

Money left over to put towards a great scope,

^^^ Agree. If I was looking to buy a "nice" rifle in the 300 Win/300 Wby/300 WSM calibers I would be looking at minimally a 24 and probably a 26" barrel to take full advantage of the "magnum".

In the 2K range I would add a Mk5 Weatherby Sporter or a Browning X-Bolt Medallion to the short list of stuff to "check out".
