I'm in the market for a different AR. I own a Colt M4A1 Socom 14.5. It is kind of barrel heavy.

I'm currently gearing up for my first CQB match and I know that my AR will do fine, but the GAS (gear acquisition syndrome ) is strong these days.

I'm looking at a short barrel 10-11 '' , 2000$-2500$ AR15.

I have my eyes on the Diemaco MRR 11.6 and DD Mk18 SBR 10.3.

Any other ideas ?

Between those 2 what would you choose and why ?

Thanks

DD MK18 - simply because you can mount the QD sling swivel on RAS 2 as close to the receiver as possible. Otherwise they do the same thing.

I'd make my own, In fact, I just did :p
12 inch rainier barrel, 11 inch v seven rail, Maxim defense stock. Things aren't torqued down just yet, but next weekend is the range trip to make sure everything works properly, then it's off to get the upper and handguard painted to match the lower.

A 10.5" - 11.5" is a good size for your CQB. An Armalite, Daniel Defence, Palmetto Armouries, BCM and LMT are great $2000 AR15 carbines.

The Mk18 is cool but shorter than 11" barrels tend to suffer throat erosion at alarming rates. The velocity gain and improved dwell time on an 11" gun is worth the extra inch or so of length. If you want an out of the box option the CC MRR 11.6" or the new DD M4V7S 11.5" are excellent choices.

Nohing wrong with wanting another rifle but if it were me I'd swap the SOCOM barrel for a regular 14.5" M4 profile or even a 14.5" pencil barrel. Afterall it's the weight that you're not liking. I had an 11.5" HBAR and it was a pig for such a compact carbine. I recently switched it out for a 14.5" M4 barrel and the diferrence in the way it handles is night and day. Gained 3" in length but the weight it lost makes it much handier.

This is my experience also. I have a 10.5" VLTOR and a 16" Colt A4 with the pencil barrel. The Colt handles and feels so much better than the shorty, and is lighter too!

Ok guys, CFO transfert pending for the MRR.

I dug a thread in the same forum (here) with the same question and it helped also for the decision.

Thanks all.

Anything heavy barrel is a pig and not worth the penalty. A gov profile or lightweight 11.5" gun is amazingly well balanced and easy to swing.

Absolutely. I was just trying to say that if he wanted to just stick with the rifle he had that a 14.5" M4 barrel is a good compromise. Of course with ARs it's hard to stick with just one. I have three myself and more uppers that will likely morph into complete guns.

Agreed on all fronts. A barrel swap for something with a lighter profile would offer the OP a solution that most closely mimics what he has already.
